Starting signal for 29 inspector candidates: internship with the police in Oberbergisch!

On Wednesday, July 9, 2025, the time had finally come: 29 commissioner candidates started an exciting time in the service of the police. These prospective police officers belong to the 2024 recruitment cohort and have started their first internship as part of the dual study program. The newcomers were welcomed in Gummersbach, where they were warmly welcomed by department head David Clemens and the heads of department Stefan Mitschke and Carolin Hosius, as the NRW Police reports.

Of the 29 candidates, 14 will complete their practical training directly at the Gummersbach police station, while eight candidates will work at the Waldbröl police station and seven will be deployed at the Wipperfürth police station. With their first operational experience, the young police officers have an exciting and instructive internship ahead of them.

From theory to practice

About nine months ago, the young police officer began his bachelor's degree, which included the first theoretical components such as legal knowledge and practical exercises in the curriculum. In the coming weeks, the candidates will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience in patrol work and in criminal investigation work. They are looked after by specially trained tutors who provide the newcomers with advice and support.

A similar situation can be seen in Hamm, where 31 candidate commissioners started their internship on July 7, 2025. Like their colleagues in Gummersbach, these candidates have previously completed theory blocks at the North Rhine-Westphalia University of Police and Public Administration, reports [WA]. The welcome from Police Chief Thomas Kubera and his deputy Jan Kieseheuer marked the start of their entry into practical police work. Here, the focus is particularly on the accompaniment and support of experienced police officers, while the newcomers can be recognized by a silver stripe on their shoulder boards.

An outlook on training

During the dual course of study, the prospective police officers are optimally prepared for their job, not only practically but also theoretically. During the basic and advanced studies, attractive subjects such as operational training, crime control, traffic safety work and many more are used, as the Polizei NRW-Bewerbung describes. Regular proof of performance in the form of exams and practical exercises are an integral part of the training. The goal: to prepare the newcomers as best as possible for their future tasks.

The internship extends until August 31, 2025. This is followed by theoretical lessons where the young candidates can deepen their newly acquired knowledge.
