Oberhausen is fighting against construction site chaos: Berg is implementing new measures!
There's a lot of simmering in Oberhausen when it comes to the traffic problem. However, a large part of the difficulties lie beyond the city's control, as Mayor Thorsten Berg emphasizes. Deutsche Bahn and Autobahn GmbH construction sites are not the only stumbling blocks here. How radiooberhausen.de reports, the city often has no choice but to wait, as it has no authority to issue orders or move construction sites.
This is particularly frustrating for citizens who are stuck in traffic jams or have to take detours every day. However, Berg is not the type to give up. He plans to seek dialogue with the railway in order to achieve better coordination in construction site planning.
Construction site management and staff expansion
In order to improve coordination, Berg also plans to increase the number of staff in the city's construction site management. After all, a good hand is required when it comes to opening the streets in Oberhausen for construction work. The goal is clear: Improvements in construction site management are expected in about a year, even if the mayor points out that there will always be construction sites where comprehensive coordination is hardly possible, such as urgent repairs.
Another pressing problem is that construction times are often exceeded. Berg plans to introduce new measures to shorten this. Other cities have already tested an interesting approach: contractual penalties for construction companies that do not complete their work on time and bonuses for particularly quick completions could also be used in Oberhausen.
New concept from Deutsche Bahn
In the meantime, Deutsche Bahn (DB) has launched a new construction site management system that will come into force in mid-July. The concept of “building in time” should be like this deutschebahn.com, create a long-term roadmap for maintenance and modernization projects. The goal is to halve schedule changes during the year by 2026 – an ambitious plan! By bundling several trades in fixed time windows, there could be fewer restrictions overall for travelers and freight transport customers.
Dr. Philipp Nagl, CEO of DB InfraGO AG, emphasizes the need for a new logic for construction site management. Efficiency is also increased by purchasing additional construction machines that are used in twice as many shifts. Not only can construction sites be better planned, but the susceptibility to disruption during modernization can also be minimized.
Diverse responsibilities and contact persons
Construction site management is often complex because several construction sites have different responsibilities. In inner-city areas there are clear regulations about which authorities are responsible. Municipalities with more than 80,000 inhabitants are responsible for the construction of federal roads, while smaller municipalities are responsible for their own roads, as shown on ihk-muenchen.de is explained. Coordination therefore requires a good level of cooperation between different providers and bodies.
In the end, however, it is clear that dialogue and a coordinated approach are the key to a better functioning transport network in Oberhausen. With Berg as mayor and DB's new initiatives, the city is facing an exciting time of change. It remains to be seen whether citizens will actually benefit from the measures - but one thing is certain: there is something there!
