Dog Erle abandoned in front of an animal shelter in Olpe – PETA offers a 500 euro reward

What a sad story we received from Olpe: On September 30th, a dog was abandoned in front of the local animal shelter. At 7:30 a.m., a shelter employee discovered the poor animal lying on a wet blanket tied to a sign pole. A handwritten letter from the previous owner was found next to her, explaining the sad decision due to lack of money and unemployment. It's really shocking to see how far people sometimes go - or rather, don't go - for their animals.

The dog, christened “Erle” by the carers, is around two to four years old and is now in good health at the animal shelter. According to reports, she is friendly and has integrated well into the group: Erle clearly enjoys playing with other dogs and enjoying walks. But she also shows fear of certain objects that have clearly left their mark on her life so far. This is particularly reinforced by the fact that she is chipped but not registered.

Suspension is not a trivial offense

The emotional engagement on social media was high. Those responsible for the animal shelter are experiencing a wave of comments that both express pity for the dog and criticize the former owners. It's hard to see how often animal abandonment happens in our society. The animal protection laws in Germany prohibit such cruel behavior as set out in Section 3 of the Animal Protection Act. Misdemeanors can be punished with fines or imprisonment. The media repeatedly reports on such incidents, which raises awareness of animal protection among the population.

To clear up Erle's case, PETA and the Olpe animal shelter have offered a reward of 500 euros for information about the dog's origins. Video footage shows she was only tied up shortly before she was discovered. Information can be submitted by email to info@tierheim-olpe.de or by telephone to PETA.

How is Erle now?

Alder is well integrated into the animal shelter. The carers ensure that she is kept in a species-appropriate manner and receives regular medical care. The animal shelter offers places of refuge for all animals and thus ensures a pleasant climate. However, the situation for many animals in homes is often not easy. Everyday life is clearly regulated and the demands are high, because both the adoption and the daily care of the animals bring their own challenges.

Many animal shelters are under financial pressure and rely on donations. They would like to employ more volunteers to make their daily work easier so that they can look after each animal in the best possible way. Community involvement is particularly important because it not only helps the animals, but also raises awareness of animal protection in Germany.

Regardless of Erle's story, we can only hope that someone can find a good home for her - because every animal has the right to a happy life. In his distress, does man lose his feeling for his fellow creature or is there perhaps a way out of the desperate situation? In the discussion about animal protection and responsibility, we should all ask ourselves how we can better protect animals and how we can sustainably support our society.

And what would Erle wish for? Maybe a warm basket and the prospect of a new life without fear and abandonment. As we all know, hope dies last.
