Serious motorcycle accident in Recklinghausen: 23-year-old seriously injured!

A serious traffic accident occurred in Recklinghausen on Sunday afternoon. There was a serious collision between a car and a motorcycle at the intersection of Neuer Kamp, Dorstener Straße and Lippramsdorfer Straße. According to information from Bild.de A 65-year-old driver from Marl was behind the wheel when he tried to cross the intersection towards Lippramsdorfer Straße. He collided with the 23-year-old motorcyclist from Haltern who had the right of way and was traveling west on Dorstener Straße.

The motorcyclist was seriously injured in the impact and had to be taken to a hospital in Bochum in a rescue helicopter. While the driver of the car and his 65-year-old passenger were uninjured, both vehicles were no longer drivable after the accident and had to be towed away. The resulting material damage amounts to around 30,000 euros. The scene of the accident was closed and traffic was diverted while the investigation was underway.

Previous motorcycle accidents in the area

This accident is not the first of its kind in Recklinghausen. There was a serious motorcycle accident on Ahornstrasse on February 13, 2023, in which a 58-year-old motorcyclist fell onto the street without a helmet or protective clothing. He also suffered serious injuries and later succumbed to his injuries in hospital, as presseportal.de reported. Such incidents highlight the dangers bikers face on the road, especially when they wear inadequate protection.

Current statistics show that riding a motorcycle poses a high risk. According to an analysis by nordhessen-journal.de The number of motorcyclists who had fatal accidents increased slightly in 2024. The main reason for many of these accidents is excessive or improper speed. Particularly in Baden-Württemberg, where more than 4,000 accidents occurred during the motorcycle season, car drivers are often the culprits, often due to turning errors or not seeing the motorcycles.

Prevention approaches for more safety

Road safety could be significantly increased if motorcyclists wore comprehensive protective clothing. Currently only about 25% of drivers are dressed accordingly. Regular driving safety training could also help prevent accidents. The responsibility for safety lies not only with drivers, but also with motorists, who are often the cause of collisions. Technical aids such as ABS and traction control should help minimize the risk.

Riding a motorcycle remains a risky affair, but with responsible driving behavior and the right protection, the goal of “Vision Zero” – no traffic fatalities – could be within reach. It remains to be hoped that the drivers affected will learn from the experience and be safer on the road.
