Shootings in Berlin: Criminal scene is increasingly arming itself!
On Monday morning there was another incident on Potsdamer Chaussee in Berlin, which illustrates the potential danger in the capital. Unknown perpetrators opened fire on a vehicle, injuring a 34-year-old man and taking him to hospital. The escape of the perpetrators leaves the Berlin police at a loss as they continue to closely monitor developments in the criminal scene. In an interview with the Berlin newspaper It was emphasized that we have to talk about increasing “armament”.
There have already been at least seven shootings in Berlin this month, which is increasingly worrying citizens. A particularly drastic shooting occurred on October 14th on Alexandrinenstrasse, in which a man and his two sisters were attacked. The background remains unclear, but it is clear that such acts of violence are no longer isolated cases. The following day, two men were wounded when they were shot at from a moving vehicle; a BVG bus also came under fire.
Statistical developments and increase in violent crime
The Police crime statistics (PKS) shows alarming figures: Last year in Berlin there were 363 cases in which shots were actually fired and 303 cases in which a firearm was threatened. It should be noted that crimes against the weapons law increased by 163 to a total of 2,312 cases in 2023. An LKA investigator reported on the increasing availability of firearms, which not only come from the underground but also sometimes come into the city via criminal networks.
A worrying trend is also evident in the data on the use of war weapons: 43 cases were registered in 2022 and 35 cases in 2023, with such weapons often being in the hands of drug gangs. A study of the Statista emphasizes that the development of crime in Germany cannot be clearly assessed, but the increase in violent crime and especially gun violence poses major challenges for many citizens.
In recent years, large caches of weapons have repeatedly been discovered, including in Remscheid near Wuppertal, where assault rifles and mortar grenades were seized. Three suspected arms dealers are currently in custody. Even if the number of finds increases, the problem remains: many criminals do not have sufficient training in handling firearms. There have already been incidents in which the perpetrators failed to hit the target during a shootout in a club, even though they pulled the trigger several times.
The signs point to alarm: The criminal scene in Berlin seems to be able to act unchecked by the police. There is growing dissatisfaction among the population about the security situation, and it remains to be hoped that the police can get the situation under control through increased controls and adequate investigations in order to protect citizens.
