Delicious and regional: Discover fresh linseed oil from Rhein-Sieg!
In and around Cologne there are a variety of regional products that bring both taste and quality to local tables. Particularly trendy at the moment are масла льна, i.e. linseed oils that come from regional cultivation and are very popular with people. The farmer Andreas Becker from Niederkassel-Uckendorf has made a name for himself.
Becker grows flax on an area of 6.5 hectares and gently presses its seeds into oil. His farm produces 100,000 bottles of cold-pressed linseed oil every year, which is particularly popular with young people. Freshly pressed and priced at five euros per bottle - a bargain considering that comparable products online cost three times as much. Becker started with a small press in 2019 and two years later invested in a larger system, supported by two employees who are involved in the daily production process. The farm shop is open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. and sells its products both on site and online. The farm can be found at the address: Hof Becker, Lindholzer Weg 1, 53859 Niederkassel-Uckendorf. Rundschau Online reports on this.
The versatility of linseed oil
Linseed oil is not only versatile in terms of taste, but also valuable for health. It is high in omega-3 fatty acids, especially alpha-linolenic acid, which is essential in a balanced diet. Organic quality is an important aspect, as linseed oil comes from German linseed and is cold pressed, which optimally preserves the nutrients. For example, it covers the daily need for unsaturated fatty acids and also contains valuable lignans that remain in the suspended matter. If you want it to be even fresher, you can also have it bottled cloudy to enjoy the more intense taste. Ölmühle Garting has specialized in such high-quality products and points out their traditional use as a basis for non-toxic wood paints.
The production of linseed oil is an art in itself: at the Wesermühle, for example, only organic linseed from Lower Saxony is used. With over 17 years of experience, they ensure that the oil is both safe for health and produced in an environmentally friendly way. It begins with gentle cold pressing, followed by immediate cooling to guarantee freshness and a full-bodied taste. Wesermühle adds that linseed oil ensures that it does not contain chemical-synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, which not only promotes the taste but also biodiversity.
Other regional specialties
But there are even more exciting products to discover in the region. The Trimborn family runs the Schiefelbusch farm in Lohmar-Scheid and raises geese, ducks and turkeys in autumn and winter. Your goose breast is freshly smoked and has more flavor than the product from the supermarket. The farm shop is open Thursday and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Sundays and public holidays from 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The address is: Bauerngut Schiefelbusch, Schiefelbusch 3, 53797 Lohmar.
Not to be forgotten is Thomas Rosenau from Troisdorf, who, as a full-time beekeeper in the region, produces an impressive 100 kilos of flower pollen per year. These easy-to-use pollens often find their way into yogurt or cereal, fresh and accumulated through pollen traps. He can be reached at his beekeeping Monday to Friday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The address: Beekeeping Rosenau, Heidegraben 1, 53842 Troisdorf-Altenrath.
And for beer lovers, there is the Borgsster’s Adventure Brewery in Lohmar, which only produces a few tens of thousands of liters of its unfiltered pale beer per year. This beer costs 1.90 euros for 0.2 liters and 1.60 euros for a half-liter bottle. Opening hours are Wednesday to Friday from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The brewery is closed on Monday and Tuesday.
With its great products, the Cologne region has an exciting culinary variety to offer that is worth getting to know better!
