City cycling 2025: Bad Honnef cycles record kilometers for climate protection!
On October 28, 2025, the celebratory award ceremony for city and school cycling took place in the town hall of Bad Honnef, where Mayor Otto Neuhoff honored the most successful participants. This year, 328 teams took part in the district-wide campaign City cycling involved. A total of 7,174 cyclists from various cities and communities in the Rhein-Sieg district pedaled.
Despite the cold and wet weather, the participants showed great ambition. Leonard Heinrich took first place, followed by Dr. Tilman Geikowski in second and Wolfgang Brück in third place. This shows that even adverse weather conditions cannot stop you from enjoying cycling. The winners not only brought joy, but also received practical bicycle bags and vouchers for a local sports store.
Positive balance for cycling
In total, an impressive distance of 1,128,839 kilometers was cycled - an achievement that exceeds the million mark for the fourth time. Even though the numbers decreased compared to the previous year, the organizer is pleased with the result. In 2024 there were still 339 teams with 8,115 participants. The CO₂ saving is also notable: 185 tons were avoided compared to driving, a significant increase from 158 tons in 2021.
In Bad Honnef itself, 153 active participants cycled almost 22,000 kilometers, which means an almost double increase compared to the previous year. Particularly noteworthy is also the “SIBI” team, which contributed 9,434 kilometers to school cycling. The students from the Nell Breuning vocational college came in second with 3,104 kilometers.
A symbol of climate protection
City cycling is not just a competition, but also an important initiative Climate Alliance, which has existed since 2008 and brings together over 1,700 members in 27 European countries. The aim is to motivate people to cycle in a playful way and to cover everyday journeys on the bike. The benefits of cycling can not only improve air quality, but also the health of participants.
Participation in this campaign not only promotes climate protection, but also makes switching to cycling more attractive. The exchange and experiences that come through this Ride a bike communicated provide important impulses for better cycling infrastructure. There are numerous advantages in the accelerated mobility, the avoidance of traffic jams and the flexibility that cycling brings to everyday life. The success of the current campaign is a strong sign that these initiatives will continue in the future - planning for 2026 is already in full swing.
Overall, city cycling encouraged participants to stay healthy and active while at the same time making a valuable contribution to climate protection.
