Erndtebrück inspires: fire brigade competition attracts 1000 helpers!
There was a lot going on in Erndtebrück last weekend! On the site of the biomass thermal power plant and in the sports and culture hall in Birkelbach, the volunteer fire brigade's fire engines II and III demonstrated their skills with an impressive demonstration of their performance. Almost 100 relay teams from the Siegen-Wittgenstein district took part in this major event, to which around 1,000 people actively contributed. The Siegen newspaper reports that Dirk Höbener, deputy district fire chief, drew a positive conclusion compared to the previous year and spoke of a positive development in recent years.
The event was organized by the Siegen-Wittgenstein district fire brigade association, and Rainald Thiemann, chairman of the KFV, praised the excellent organization. The firefighters were able to demonstrate their skills in various practical exercises. This included, among other things, technical assistance, firefighting, relay races and first aid. Even the knotted braid wasn't neglected!
Camaraderie and community spirit
The competition was given a special touch by the camaraderie events with music that took place after the competitions. Michael Dellori, deputy head of the Erndtebrück Volunteer Fire Department, thanked the companies that made the site available and thus made the eventual implementation possible. The Birkelbach fire department is also already preparing for its day of action on August 31st, which is part of the celebrations for its 550th anniversary.
Fire departments in Germany play an important role in society. At the end of 2022, there were around 48,100 fire departments in Germany, and volunteer firefighters made up the largest proportion with over a million members. Loud Statista The fire brigade responded to around 229,000 fires and explosions in 2022 alone. In addition, the focus of operations in recent years has increasingly shifted to rescue and technical assistance.
The German Fire Brigade Association reported on the challenges that fire departments face. It's not just the operations, but also the increasing acts of violence against firefighters. In 2023, 687 such incidents were recorded with around 1,070 victims. The number of insults and threats is particularly worrying; Almost half of the active members of voluntary fire departments have had such negative experiences.
However, the successful competitions and events like in Erndtebrück show that cohesion and the community spirit remain strong. Thomas Reuter, head of the competitions department at the German Fire Brigade Association, is convinced that the traditional competitions also help to promote the fire brigade spirit and strengthen the community. The Fire Brigade Association highlights the importance of these competitions and encourages volunteers to continue to be actively involved.
