Balcony power plants: Energy transition for tenants – information event in Solingen!
Nowadays, when sustainability and cost efficiency are more in demand than ever, the topic of balcony power plants is coming into focus. These compact solar devices, also known as plug-in solar devices, are enjoying increasing popularity in German households. According to that Solingen news Over a million of these systems in Germany now feed self-generated electricity into households. An information event organized by BürgerEnergie Solingen highlights the advantages of this technology, which represents an exciting opportunity for both tenants and homeowners to participate in the energy transition.
But what exactly is a balcony power plant? The devices consist of a solar module, an inverter, a plug and a fastening. They can be easily installed on balconies or terraces and generate between 250 and 280 kWh annually, which can cover up to 20% of the basic needs of an average household with 1500 kWh consumption. The acquisition costs are between 400 and 1,000 euros. But before it starts, the devices must be registered with the network operator and the Federal Network Agency, and the consent of the homeowner is required, as the consumer advice center notes.
Balcony power plant and battery storage
The technical developments in this area are remarkable. Thanks to falling prices and easy commissioning, the systems are becoming more and more attractive. The combination with battery storage is particularly worthwhile, as it allows solar power to be used even in bad weather. This possibility will be discussed during the event on Thursday, November 6, 2025, from 4:30 p.m., in the Transparent Workshop, Hauptstraße 61–63, Solingen-Mitte. Florian Bublies, an energy consultant at the North Rhine-Westphalia Consumer Center, will address the legal aspects, the technical principles and the economic viability of battery storage in his presentation. There is also space for individual questions and exchanges with other interested parties.
“Tenants can actively contribute to the energy transition,” says Bublies, mentioning the great opportunity that balcony power plants offer. By generating their own energy, consumers not only reduce their electricity costs, but also help reduce CO2 emissions. A real win for the environment and your wallet, showing that everyone can make a difference, regardless of their living situation.
Technical requirements and registration
The installation of the devices has been permitted since May 2018, but there are still some technical requirements that must be observed. Every balcony power plant should have unrestricted access to the south side and be installed in a storm-proof manner. Optimal alignment is crucial, and the ideal angle is between 30 and 40 degrees. Over the course of the year, significant electricity savings can be achieved during installation, but care must be taken to ensure that the system does not exceed an output of 800 watts in order to comply with the relevant network operator regulations.
Loud Consumer advice center Tenants should consult before installation, as not all electricity suppliers share the same interpretations of the law. Advice from professionals can be helpful here to clarify any necessary permits and ensure that everything is installed to the latest standards.
The information event on November 6th is an excellent opportunity to obtain comprehensive information about this innovative technology. The path to your own solar power supply will be much easier with a relaxed exchange and technical input from experts. It's definitely worth a visit - not just for future operators of balcony power plants, but for anyone who wants to think about an environmentally friendly energy future.
