ESV 1927 Regensburg loses again – coach criticizes weak first half!
After a disappointing start to the 2025/26 handball season, ESV 1927 Regensburg can look back on a mixed record. The third competitive game of the season ended last weekend with a defeat against VfL Waiblingen. With 23:29 (9:15) the Regensburg team lost out again. Loud Home sport Coach Bernhard Goldbach's team was under pressure from the first minute of the game.
Shock start for the Regensburg team
In Waiblingen, Regensburg found themselves 2:10 behind after just ten minutes. The biggest deficit was a maximum deficit of 4:13 in the 20th minute. The goal scorers in the first half deserve special mention: Theresa Lettl (3/1), Lisa Opitz, Melina Hahn (2), Julika Birnkammer, Maxie Fuhrmann and Milena Stürenburg. Coach Goldbach was dissatisfied after the game and criticized the many technical errors and his team's poor throwing behavior.
Catching up without finishing
After the half-time break, Goldbach changed tactics and had Leni Goldbach take over the middle back position. This worked: Regensburg was able to reduce the score to 15:19, but the hoped-for turnaround failed to materialize. Waiblingen countered with a strong 4-0 run and took a clear lead to 23:15 (42nd minute). Ultimately, the second half ended evenly at 14:14. Goldbach summed up: “In the second half we showed character and stuck more closely to the match plan.”
The coming games bring a challenge
The next game for ESV 1927 is against Solingen-Gräfrath, before two game-free weekends are on the agenda. In contrast to previous performances, where the club struggled strongly, it remains to be seen whether the team can now recover. The lack of support from Franzi Peter, who has been out due to injury since mid-July, is bitter.
A look back – the win against SV Michelfeld
The team managed to confidently manage the deficit until the end. Johannes Kreibig and Marcel Elgeti stood out with many goals and contributed their part to the success. Despite the good performance, coach Roy Müller called for more passion for the upcoming game. The ESV would like to consolidate its position in the top league with another win against SG Helmbrechts/Münchberg on October 12th.
The coming period will be crucial for Regensburg. Hopefully the team can put together the right performance to get the fans back on board and regain their confidence.
