Breakdown in the electoral office: incorrect ballot papers could endanger local elections!

In Solingen, an error in the distribution of postal voting documents is causing unrest, just in time for the upcoming local elections on September 14th. Like the Solinger Tageblatt reported, around 450 eligible voters in local electoral district 16 (Kannenhof – Meigen – Halfeshof) have already received incorrect ballot papers. A ballot paper intended for the election of the council was mistakenly issued to voters from District 15 (Klauberg – Hasseldelle – Kohlfurth).

The electoral office intervened and immediately started checking the existing documents. Luckily, it turns out that only a handful of such errors occurred. To limit confusion, all affected voters will be informed and given the opportunity to request new postal voting documents. However, anyone who submits the application must expect that their old voting slip will be declared invalid and the votes already cast will be destroyed without being opened.

Action required by September 12th

The documents that have already been returned remain valid unless new documents are requested. Votes from other districts will not be counted; However, the votes for the election of the mayor and the district council remain valid. To be on the safe side, those responsible at the electoral office recommend not putting off applying for the new postal voting documents. Applications are possible until Friday, September 12th at 3 p.m., either by email wahlen@solingen.de or in person at the postal voting office at Grünstraße 2, Ohligs.

The breakdown has already made its first waves and is being viewed critically from various quarters. However, the administration has stressed that it is making every effort to conduct the election properly, despite the inconsistencies that have arisen. Nevertheless, this incident could possibly have an impact on the election result, as the Solinger Nachrichten reports report.

Right to vote for all citizens

The issue of accessibility also plays a crucial role in the discussion about voting. The Federal Agency for Civic Education clarifies that numerous regulations exist to make the choice easier for people with disabilities. These include the possibility of applying for a voting slip in order to vote at an accessible polling station, as well as the provision of voting templates for blind and visually impaired people. These measures will help ensure voter participation for all citizens and broaden the right to vote, including those in psychiatric facilities.

Overall, it remains to be hoped that the glitch does not undermine the electoral system and that as many citizens as possible take advantage of the opportunity to cast their vote. The coming days will show how the situation develops and whether all voters receive the correct ballot papers on time. The countdown to the local elections has begun!
