Creative minds in MINT: First Ideathon inspires Steinfurt!
Future orientation is very important! The first took place on June 16, 2025 in the Steinfurt district hallMINT Ideathontook place, an exciting event that brought together students, teachers and company representatives. This event was organized by the Economic Development and Development Company Steinfurt mbH (WESt) in order to provide new impulses in career and study orientation, especially in the MINT area (mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology).
At a time when MINT careers are becoming increasingly important, a clear focus was placed on innovative workshop formats. Selected schools like thatSchool at Bagnoin Steinfurt and the Martinum high school in Emsdetten were involved. The topics of the workshops ranged from:artificial intelligenceaboveMetal constructionup toSpecial vehicle constructionandPaper technology. It was important for the participants to hear and discuss the perspectives of students and teachers as well as companies.
MINT partnership for the future
Like those too Shortage of skilled workers In these professions, MINT specialists are essential for economic development and competitiveness. The need is high, but vacancies often remain unfilled. Companies are faced with the challenge of finding the right young talent, while at the same time the number of graduates in MINT courses is not sufficient. Demographic changes and prejudices about STEM careers are exacerbating this problem.
Precisely for this reason, a central goal of the Ideathon was to find new approaches to solutions through exchange between companies and educational institutions. Ultimately, these ideas should not remain just theoretical: After the summer holidays, the plan is to offer the developed workshops in schools in the district.
From theory to practice
Another important aspect of the MINT Ideathon was the involvement of companies in MINT work. A presentation also took place as part of the event, with representatives from companies such as:Magneraand thatTechnology Campus FH Münsterpresented their perspectives and ideas. This collaboration aims to secure know-how in MINT subjects and at the same time STEM rally to move forward. Here, companies present their professions directly to schools, and trainees carry out practical exercises with the students.
With a budget of 170,000 euros for MINT measures in 2025, which is shared by the North Rhine-Westphalia Regional Directorate of the Federal Employment Agency and the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, it is also clear at a financial level how seriously the shortage of skilled workers should be addressed. The aim is to arouse young people's interest in MINT careers through practice-oriented teaching methods and close cooperation with educational institutions.
Overall, these initiatives impressively demonstrate how important networking between schools, companies and politics is in order to counteract the shortage of skilled workers in MINT professions in the long term. The Ideathon once again showed that in the future, education and innovation will not only be looked at, but actively acted upon.
