On November 2nd, 2025 the time has finally come: the first Christmas market in North Rhine-Westphalia opens its doors in Essen-Steele at 11:00 a.m. This early opening, which has now become a tradition, dates back to a happy coincidence 15 years ago. At that time, people accidentally found out about the wrong date from the town hall, which gave the organizers of the Initiativkreis City Steele e.V. the idea to start the market a little earlier.
The pre-Christmas season is now in full swing! The streets of Steele are enveloped in a veritable sea of lights and the seductive scent of mulled wine, roasted almonds and gingerbread magically attracts visitors. And with 100 stalls offering numerous culinary delights and artisanal products, there is something for everyone. The range of food on offer is a real treat: a cup of mulled wine and a bratwurst are available for just 4 euros.
Attractions and highlights
A special crowd puller this year is the impressive 15 meter high Christmas tree, which rotates for 2 euros. The proceeds go to a child protection organization - a successful combination of fun and social commitment. In addition, railway fans big and small can look forward to three old locomotives in the “Railroad Village”: a field railway steam locomotive from 1913, a diesel locomotive from 1935 and a modern battery-powered locomotive. A historical replica of the former Essen-Steele Süd train station completes the offer.
Entertainment is also provided. A varied program with various performances awaits visitors on the WAZ Christmas stage. The entire Steeler city center is transformed into a Christmas festival and offers rides for the little visitors, making the entire family trip an unforgettable experience.

To make the visit even more pleasant, the stands will offer a wide range of gift ideas as well as numerous culinary delicacies. The selection ranges from traditional Christmas snacks to creative new delicacies waiting to be discovered.
