Cast off! Discover maritime treasures in the LVR Museum Wesel

An exciting maritime journey of discovery awaits visitors in the heart of Wesel. The LVR Lower Rhine Museum is currently presenting a special exhibition dedicated to the facets of overseas shipping. The focus is on impressive large-format photographs, illustrated by a collection of postcards and old travel posters, which bring the fascination and history of shipping to life.

The exhibition not only shows wonderful historical sailing yachts and impressive battleships, but also steamers, barges as well as fishing and leisure boats. More than 150 originals of historical toy ships from all over the world round off the offering. The manufacturers also include well-known names from Germany, the former GDR, the USA, France, England, Canada, Spain, Bulgaria, the Soviet Union, Italy, Mexico, Japan and Hong Kong. Particularly worth mentioning is a Roman ship model from Xanten, which takes visitors back in time.

Diverse accompanying program

But the exhibition is not all the museum has to offer. An exciting accompanying program invites you to various events: On September 9th at 7 p.m. there will be a reading by the well-known author Wladimir Kaminer from his work “The Crusaders”. And on September 20th between 4 and 6:30 p.m., children can get active themselves at the “Hau ruck – Fast Boat Building” workshop – part of the Wesel Children’s Culture Night.

For environmentally conscious participants, the workshop “Ahoy, Plastic Pirates!” will be held on October 22nd from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. who deals with the plastic problem in the oceans. And on October 25th, another workshop “Maritimes in Watercolor” invites you to get creative. The crowning conclusion will be a lecture by Dr. Lars Gutow on marine littering. All events take place directly in the museum and promise educational and entertaining hours.

More maritime highlights in Germany

If you are looking for further maritime experiences in Germany, you should take a detour to this International Maritime Museum Hamburg plan. Visitors can expect the world's largest private collection of maritime exhibits, which includes over 26,000 ship models and 50,000 construction plans. The shipping and naval history of the last 3,000 years comes to life on nine themed decks. A very special highlight is a LEGO replica of QUEEN MARY 2, which consists of around 1 million LEGO bricks!

This is another maritime gem German Naval Museum in Wilhelmshaven, where the history of the German naval forces from 1948 to today is told. Exhibits such as the guided missile destroyer Mölders make a visit a unique experience for history buffs.

That too Oceaneum in Stralsund and that German Maritime Museum in Bremerhaven are worth a visit and offer deeper insights into the fascinating world of shipping and maritime research. With so many options, the maritime flair of Germany becomes an experience for the whole family.
