Wuppertal ahead: BUGA 2031 brings a new mobility concept!

On October 28, 2025, the focus in Wuppertal will be on preparations for the 2031 Federal Garden Show (BUGA). A central project that has currently been launched is “BUGA in MoVe”. The city of Wuppertal and BUGA 2031 gGmbH are doing everything they can to develop a modern, integrated mobility concept. This concept is intended not only to ensure the movement of visitors during the garden show, but also to shape the future use of mobility offers in the city.

Diversity of mobility offers

Given the large number of visitors who will be arriving from all over Germany, the question of travel and mobility is anything but irrelevant. Various aspects are examined here. How can visitors arrive comfortably? How can drivers effectively switch to public transport? The focus is also on controlling the number of visitors so that there are no bottlenecks. This also includes the creation of parking spaces for mobile homes and consideration of environmentally friendly, barrier-free access to all BUGA locations.

This is to be achieved with various planned measures: shuttle connections, additional bicycle parking facilities and well-signposted footpaths are just a few of the ideas. Digital systems for visitor guidance should also be used. First, the project team analyzes the current traffic situation and creates forecasts for traffic in 2031, which aim to create a well-thought-out mobility concept - not only for BUGA, but also for the period afterwards. “BUGA in MoVe” thus pursues the goal of sustainable, barrier-free and networked mobility throughout the city, which is important beyond the garden show. Wuppertal.de reports that the planning is carried out in close cooperation between the city administration, WSW mobil GmbH and external specialist offices.

Attractive areas for the BUGA

But it's not just about mobility. BUGA 2031 has also set itself ambitious goals. She wants to master the challenges of the future and make the west of the city more attractive. Three core areas are planned: the Tesche core area, which represents a new residential area that will be accessed via Vohwinkel train station. In addition, the “Green Zoo” is being renovated and is closely linked to BUGA. Another highlight is the planned 700 meter long suspension bridge to cross the valley in the Wupperpforte area.

The motto of the BUGA, “The BUGA connects”, is clear in these concepts, which also open up local recreation areas and promote new cycle routes in order to support climate-friendly individual transport. Here, too, we rely on innovative solutions that are intended to bring not only temporary but long-term benefits. Bundesgartenschau.de covers all details about the planned areas that will let Wuppertal shine in a new light.

The development of “BUGA in MoVe” and the plans for the garden show itself are a big step into the future for Wuppertal. The city is faced with the challenge of establishing an attractive and well-functioning concept that will be of use to all Wuppertal residents not only during the BUGA, but also beyond.
