Weidel calls Merz the lying chancellor”: Debate about Germany’s future breaks out

On July 9, 2025, there will be a heated debate in the Bundestag that heats up tempers and clarifies the political fronts. Alice Weidel, the opposition leader of the AfD, opens the general debate and does not skimp on harsh accusations against Chancellor Friedrich Merz. She accuses him of “escaping reality” and claims that the restart that Merz promised is just a continuation of the traffic light government’s policy. “Germany is in decline,” emphasizes Weidel, while criticizing the black-red coalition for not cutting electricity taxes.

In her passionate speech, Weidel didn't say anything good about Merz. She calls him the “paper chancellor” and accuses him of allowing himself to be paraded by the SPD. Merz, who has only been in office for 65 days, has been slower than expected to accept the accusation of not bringing the promised changes. This also confirms rp online, according to which Weidel also describes Merz as a “lying chancellor” and accuses him of breaking his word and electoral fraud.

The household and its challenges

In the background of the lively debate is the draft budget for 2025, which was presented by Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil. With planned spending of 503 billion euros, an increase of 6.1 percent compared to the previous year, the government is making it clear that it wants to remain willing to invest even in difficult times. However, a significant part - 81.8 billion euros - is to be financed through loans, which will increase the debt burden even further. The cabinet plans to incur a total of almost 850 billion euros in new debt by 2029.

Weidel uses the opportunity to appeal to the government to rethink migration policy. At this point it becomes clear: “Inadequate border controls and restrictions on family reunification are simply not acceptable.” Weidel also doesn't neglect discussing violence and school problems in Germany and underpins her critical view of the new government.

Political attacks and a wave of outrage

The arguments in the general debate shed light on the current political mood in the country. Merz counters Weidel's accusations, who dismiss his views as nationalistic, and tries to convey courage and confidence to citizens. “We have achieved a change in mood,” he announces optimistically, pointing to Germany’s leading role in the EU and NATO, for which higher defense spending is necessary. Authorized sueddeutsche.de stated that the discussion is not just about numbers, but also about the vision and direction for Germany's future.

While Weidel criticizes the SPD's considerations and its candidate for the Federal Constitutional Court, Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf, the AfD also appears to be the strongest opposition faction that has the right to open the debate about the Chancellor's budget. This red-hot controversy highlights more than just political differences; it is also a reflection of the current social tensions in Germany.

Regardless of how the debate ends, one thing is certain: the political fronts are clear and the influence of the AfD as an opposition force will not become less dramatic.
