Reopening of the Laurentius Church: A sign of hope for Ahrweiler!
Next Sunday the Laurentius Church in Ahrweiler will celebrate an impressive comeback. After years of repair work, the church, which is over 750 years old and was severely damaged by the devastating flood disaster in 2021, is being reopened. The flood, caused by heavy rain, left water up to one meter high in the church. Numerous people died in this tragedy, especially in the Ahr Valley, where 135 of the more than 180 deaths in Germany occurred. The tragedy left deep scars, but the community's faith and hope remained strong, and the reopening represents an important step towards normality, as domradio.de reports.
The renovation of the Laurentius Church was a mammoth task that cost an estimated four million euros. In addition to the new floor and the fresh pews, art-historically valuable ceiling frescoes were also brought back. A new altar made of Belgian bluestone will be consecrated during a celebratory service led by Bishop Stephan Ackermann from Trier; Bishop Helmut This from Aachen will also take part in the ceremony. The special design of the altar, with two brass lines, will symbolize the water level of the flood and the destruction that comes with it, as tagesschau.de reports.
Restoration and hope
Numerous works of art and the interior decoration of the church suffered greatly from the flood; The stench and desperation were omnipresent on the devastating night of the flood, reported Pastor Jörg Meyrer. However, thanks to the tireless efforts of the congregation, services have now been able to be held in the parish hall or outdoors again while the renovation work progresses. From August 10, 2025, regular services can be celebrated in the Laurentius Church again. St. Laurentius is also the first major church in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler to reopen after the flood, as bpb.de notes.
The flood disaster that took place on July 14th and 15th, 2021 caused massive damage: over 9,000 buildings and 100 bridges in the Ahr Valley were either completely destroyed or severely damaged. The financial damage amounts to over 40 billion euros, making this catastrophe the largest natural disaster in Germany. However, there are also bright spots; A campaign called “We Ahr open” aims to promote tourism in the Ahr valley in order to get the damaged region back on its feet.
Way into the future
With the opening of St. Laurentius, a bit of hope and normality will return. The Catholic Rosary Church is scheduled to open in the winter of 2025, while the Protestant Martin Luther Church is still under construction. This progress is part of a larger recovery that is ongoing, and civic support and government assistance programs are essential. Although great progress has been made, the challenge remains to address the psychological impact of the disaster, with many residents reporting financial and emotional stress. But the community sticks together and looks forward to a better future while not forgetting the past.
