Alarming bird flu: Mandatory stables for our poultry farms!

Today there are several developments that affect people in Cologne and the surrounding area. One of these is the increasing threat of bird flu, which is targeting poultry operations in Rhineland-Palatinate. In a recent statement, the Rhineland-Palatinate Poultry Industry Association called for mandatory stables in order to protect the animals and prevent the herd from dying. First chairwoman Guido Andres emphasized animal protection and explained that the obligation to keep stables could prevent the killing of uninfected animals. “There is something going on,” says Andres, summarizing the need for the measures.

Bird flu is spreading rapidly, especially in the Rhein-Hunsrück district. According to the state investigation office in Koblenz, there is an “unusual dynamic” behind the spread of this disease. Poultry farms in Germany are particularly affected, with the greatest losses in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Brandenburg. Studies have shown that a high dose of infection could also be transmitted to humans. However, so far there are no known cases of subtypical H5N1 in Germany, which at least brings some reassurance. Nevertheless, the Robert Koch Institute warns that if you become ill, more severe courses can be expected.

Economic uncertainty

Another aspect that concerns many people is the price development for eggs and poultry products. The poultry industry association cannot yet give a forecast because pricing depends heavily on the extent of bird flu in Europe and also on the losses that the companies have to accept. This economic uncertainty not only affects farmers, but also consumers, who may have to accept higher prices.

Technological advances in AI

The technological advances are in direct contrast to the challenges the poultry industry is experiencing due to bird flu. This shows once again how dynamic and at the same time uncertain the economic landscape in which we operate is.
