Red alert in Saxony: The dangerous Tapinoma ant is spreading!

Concerns about invasive species in Germany are increasing. Especially the ant species Tapinoma magnum, also known as the large gland ant, has now settled in Saxony. The first documented finds come from Coswig, Langebrück and Übigau near Dresden as well as from other German regions such as Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse. Bernhard Seifert, an experienced entomologist, has already identified occurrences in a garden center and in the outskirts of Dresden.

This type of ant usually measures between 2 and 4 millimeters, although the size of the workers can vary greatly. Their appearance and specific behavior could make tenants and homeowners sit up and take notice. Because the Tapinoma magnum is not just a harmless garden creature. When threatened, the ants release an intense scent and can cause great damage with their massive colonies, which consist of up to millions of ants. In Kehl (Baden-Württemberg) there have already been power and internet outages that can be traced back to the activity of this ant species.

Detection and dangers

An important characteristic of Tapinoma magnum is its distinctive smell. Crushed ants give off a rancid, buttery, slightly sour scent. They also pile up large amounts of sand in their nests, another identifying feature. Classified as an invasive species, combating this ant species is anything but easy. Experts advise against using insecticides as they often do not eliminate colonies permanently and can be harmful to health.

For residents who have to deal with an ant infestation, it is important to first accurately identify the species. MDR recommends making a sugar solution and placing it near the nest. After about 10 to 20 minutes, the first ants can often be observed, which makes analysis easier. Anyone who sees the ants should not forget to take into account historical findings about their habitats, which are often found in cracks in streets or paved areas.

Tips for combating it

If you want to avoid unpleasant surprises with your lovely little crawlies, then here are some tips: First, the access between your home and the outdoors should be carefully considered. It often helps to eliminate the causes of the infestation - for example by tightly sealing food or preventing cracks through which the ants can enter. The garden journal also advises using natural deterrents such as herbs or vinegar. In urban areas such as Cologne, if there are major problems with hot water devices, the community could be involved in combating the colonies.

The spread of Tapinoma magnum is a sign of the increasing challenges facing the local population. The protection of the technical infrastructure and the economy is necessary to ensure the quality of life of citizens. Rapid identification and reporting of occurrences could be the key to combating this small pest.
