Reality of life in the West Bank: The struggle of a German-Palestinian

In Germany, specifically in Leiningerland, Murad lives a peaceful life with his family. His wife and child enjoy the benefits of a normality that seems almost paradisiacal compared to the situation in the West Bank. Because while Murad has to get used to the reality of life in Germany, in his homeland he is exposed to a constant feeling of fear. He doesn't need to fear harassment or arbitrary arrest here, although this is commonplace in Palestine. That's exactly what describes it Rhine Palatinate impressive.

But the situation in the West Bank remains worrying. Loud Human Rights Watch Attacks by settlers on Palestinians have increased significantly in recent months. More than 20 communities are affected, and as of October 7, 2023, at least seven of them have been completely displaced. The reports of torture, sexual violence and the threat of violence are shocking. While the world's attention is focused on what is happening in Gaza, brutality in the West Bank is increasing unhindered. This escalation is accompanied by suspected support from higher authorities, as it is reported that settlers and soldiers often act in unison.

Expulsions and international outcry

The number of people affected is alarming: over 1,200 people, including 600 children, have been displaced from their rural communities. Since then, Human Rights Watch has collected numerous testimonies and published videos showing military personnel during the aggression. On top of that, a large number of armed reservists who had only recently been called up created additional uncertainty. These settlers often shoot Palestinians without notice and rarely face legal consequences.

Even in the refugee camps that are looked after by the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), the situation looks bleak. Around 5.9 million people are receiving support in 58 refugee camps in countries such as Jordan, Syria and Lebanon. Many of these refugees live in abject poverty. The situation has particularly worsened in Syria, where 82 percent of Palestinians live in absolute poverty. The context in which Murad lives is a disturbing reflection of an ongoing crisis that, for many Palestinians, offers no prospect of improvement.

A look into the past and the hope for peace

The background to this conflict is complex and deeply rooted. On October 7, 2023, the situation escalated when Hamas attacked Israel, further dampening the hopes of many for lasting peace and a return to their hometowns. These events show how closely the fate of the Palestinian refugees is linked to current developments in the conflict. Loud DW Around seven million Palestinians in the Middle East live under varying legal conditions that often restrict their basic human rights. Rights of return are a dream that can only be realized through peace negotiations.

Reports of repeated and systematic attacks on civilians in the West Bank have sparked global outrage. It remains to be seen whether international pressure can lead to change or whether the long-simmering conflict will continue for the time being, while Murad and many others have to live in a constant fear that also affects their families far from home.
