B 48 in Salinental: Major construction site starts - traffic controls and closures!

In the coming weeks, work to upgrade federal highway 48 in the Salinental will gain momentum. As the city of Bad Kreuznach reports, temporary widenings of the B 48 are already in place so that traffic can drive on it. Work on the mountainside will begin in mid-July with essential slope stabilization measures along the rock face.

The focus is particularly on the construction of the new mountain-side roadway, which also includes a cycle path and footpath. Road users must be prepared for the fact that traffic control will sometimes take place via traffic lights. In addition, full closures are planned on weekends when the asphalt surface layer is being installed. Construction work is progressing towards Bad Münster am Stein-Ebernburg and is scheduled to be completed by 2028. A good reason to show understanding for the upcoming disruptions!

Important measures and investments

The project will see the construction of two bus bays to improve public transport. The plans also create additional safe crossing options for pedestrians and provide for the creation of a roundabout on Burgweg. The total costs for this measure amount to over 4 million euros, with the federal government covering three quarters of the costs. The city of Bad Kreuznach finances the remaining contribution.

Meanwhile, preparations for the bridge expansion at the Guldenbach Bridge in Langenlonsheim are also in full swing. As can be read on the website of the Rhineland-Palatinate State Office for Mobility, the construction road and the assembly site on the northwestern side have already been completed. The existing bridge will be completely demolished and the new superstructure will be constructed from pre-stressed precast concrete elements founded on bored piles. The footpaths and cycle paths will be made much safer thanks to their wider dimensions.

Traffic control and diversions

This has certain consequences for road users: A prudent diversion leads from Langenlonsheim via the B 48 to Gensingen, then on the L 242, L 400 and the B 41 to Bad Kreuznach. It will probably require a certain amount of patience from residents while the road is modernized again.

Overall, road construction in Germany continues to be a growing sector, after a slight decline. In 2023, more than 13 billion euros were generated in road construction. It remains to be hoped that the upcoming investments in the area of highways and their infrastructure will sustainably improve the conditions for road users, so that both drivers and cyclists and pedestrians can travel safely in the future.

The city of Bad Kreuznach and the State Office for Mobility ask all road users to understand the inevitable disruptions during the construction period. Further information and updates about changes in the construction process will be available in a timely manner.
