Bad Kreuznach cycles 176,528 kilometers to success in CITY CYCLING!

CITY CYCLING 2025 was celebrated with great enthusiasm in Bad Kreuznach. Mayor Emanuel Letz and competition coordinator Thomas Fischer honored the winners of this inspiring event that brings people together and puts cycling in the spotlight. This year, 841 cyclists in 45 teams covered a total of an impressive 176,528 kilometers. A small decrease compared to the previous year, when 873 cyclists had completed 190,758 kilometers, but the number of participants remains considerable, especially when you consider that in 2010 there were only 84 cyclists who rode a total of 14,314 kilometers.

Alex Groehl took the individual victory with 2,504 kilometers driven. The Lina-Hilger-Gymnasium emerged as the most successful team and achieved an incredible 34,743 kilometers, supported by 223 students. In the “most active bicycle performance” category, the “kilometer eaters” stood out with an average of 949 kilometers per person, which shows how active and committed the participants were.

Solemn honor and outlook

The celebratory award ceremony took place in the casino of the town hall, where not only were the winners honored, but the organizational team around Thomas Fischer, Herman Holste, Andreas Geers, Christian Thamm and Eberhard Könnemann were also praised for their efforts. As a small thank you, the organizers received shopping vouchers. Fischer, who is retiring next spring, has been the coordinator of CITY CYCLING in Bad Kreuznach since 2010 and expressed his wish that the event would be continued in the coming years.

Bad Kreuznach ranked 417th out of 3,002 municipalities nationwide and took 72nd place out of 147 in its size category of 50,000 to 99,999 inhabitants. In summary, the historic cityscape occupies a main place in the promotion of cycling through such committed activities.

Cycling – a trend with a future

Cycling remains an important part of a sustainable lifestyle. There are around 84 million bicycles in Germany, basically one for every resident. The trend continues to point upwards, as around four million bicycles were sold in 2023. Four out of ten Germans use their bikes regularly, which not only benefits the environment but also their health. Bicycles are flexible, cost-effective and get people moving - a real win for everyone.

But using the bicycle in Germany also brings with it challenges. While the expansion of separate cycle paths is being pushed forward, many cyclists complain about poorly developed routes and uneven paths that spoil the fun of riding. The accident statistics show a worrying picture: in 2023, around 95,000 cyclists had accidents, including 446 who lost their lives. More information and better infrastructure are needed here to make cycling safer.

The event and the positive response in Bad Kreuznach show that the community is behind one goal: to promote cycling and integrate it as an integral part of everyday life. With such commitment and the support of its citizens, Bad Kreuznach could soon set new records in CITY CYCLING - and perhaps contribute to Germany being more recognized internationally when it comes to cycling infrastructure.
