Illegal garbage disposal in Wittlich: Police are looking for witnesses and information!

On Sunday evening, October 26th, there was a scandalous incident at the Rommelbach car park in Wittlich around 8 p.m. An unknown man dumped two large blue garbage bags unannounced at the glass container and then left on a scooter. Not only that, an attentive witness dared to speak to the perpetrator, but he ignored her call and continued to flee. The Wittlich police have asked for help and are asking witnesses to call 06571 9260 or email piwittlich@polizei.rlp.de to report. The description of the perpetrator is particularly eye-catching: He is estimated to be around 30 to 35 years old, has a petite build and is around 1.70 meters tall. In terms of clothing, he wore dark pants and a jacket that had eye-catching neon yellow elements on the sleeves and along the zipper. His headgear was a brown-red knitted hat, with dark hair sticking out from under the hat.

But what drives people to simply dump their rubbish? In Germany, the Circular Economy Act (KrWG) regulates proper waste disposal. It sets targets for waste prevention and recycling - a responsible attitude that everyone should adopt. In the case of illegal waste disposal, offenders risk hefty fines, which can vary depending on the federal state and type of offense. In North Rhine-Westphalia, where Wittlich is located, the fine for improper disposal of household waste is between 10 and 25 euros and for bulky waste between 50 and 150 euros. In particularly serious cases, the maximum fines can reach up to 50,000 euros if, for example, there are health risks or a threat to the environment.

Why are such acts so problematic?

Illegal waste disposal not only has a negative impact on the cityscape, but also on the environment. Garbage that is not disposed of properly can pollute our soil and waterways and significantly reduce the quality of life in a region. It is all the more important that citizens take responsibility for their waste and stick to the rules. Recycling and waste avoidance are the order of the day in order to ensure sustainable use of our resources. The incident in Wittlich shows that there is an urgent need for action.

Local authorities and the police are committed to ensuring that such acts do not go unpunished. The investigation and prosecution of environmental crimes are essential to raise the community's awareness of this important issue and encourage responsible action. Let's work together to ensure that our surroundings remain clean and livable!
