Traben-Trarbach laughs: Caricature of Trump inspires the city

In the picturesque Moselle community of Traben-Trarbach, a cartoon about the friendship between Donald Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is causing a stir. Published under the title “Traben-Trarbach is now called Trumpen-Trumpbach,” the drawing humorously shows how this connection is transformed into a new name. The caricature by Achim Greser and Heribert Lenz appeared in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung in June and reflects the lightness of the local reaction: calmness and a smile at the funny renaming. Jürgen Waxweiler, a freelance artist, then launched a fundraising campaign to purchase the drawing for the city. The goal is to raise 1,500 euros, and there is great interest: 28 institutions and individuals have already donated between 10 and 200 euros. Waxweiler also plans to exhibit the caricature in the Middle Moselle Museum, which is run by Christof Krieger. When the illustrators visited, both creative minds celebrated the authorship of the work. The caricature will be included as a contemporary piece in the museum's permanent exhibition, where it will be admired in a size of 20 x 15 cm on handmade paper made of ink and watercolor. A ceremonial unveiling will take place for the city's citizens and visitors on Sunday, September 14th.

Not only is the role of caricature examined here, but the question of the limits of satire is also raised. Merz himself described cartoons as a sign of freedom of expression and freedom of the press, important for democracy. And in fact, the exhibition is already a continuation of an earlier success from 2019 in Bonn, supplemented by fresh caricatures by Olaf Scholz. Participation is free for all visitors and the exhibition can be viewed until August 18th.
