Two consecutive accidents on Mainzer Straße in Bingen!

On Monday, December 23, 2025, two traffic accidents occurred on Mainzer Straße in Bingen, which aroused public interest. These incidents took place on state road 419 in the direction of Bingen-Stadt, not far from the junction with Bingen-Gaulsheim. According to reports from Antenne KH and the Allgemeine Zeitung, the first accident was around 10:55 a.m. when a car hit the rear of a vehicle in front.

But that's not all: the vehicle that was involved in this first collision continued its journey and crashed again into another car in front around 100 meters later. The passenger of this vehicle suffered minor injuries. The material damage to all vehicles involved is significant, and the police have already started an investigation to clarify the exact cause, as a medical background to the driver's unusual driving behavior is suspected. A blood sample was taken to check driving ability. The exact cause of both accidents is still unclear.

Frequency of traffic accidents

These incidents are in the context of a current trend in Germany, where around 2.5 million road traffic accidents were registered in 2024. Although the number of accidents overall has fallen slightly, the number of accidents resulting in property damage remains high. According to Statista, the number of accidents resulting in personal injuries remained stable compared to previous decades. When it comes to the most common causes of these accidents, insufficient distance and inappropriate speed remain at the top of the list - behaviors that, as human factors, often lead to serious accidents.

The “Vision Zero” objective, which is being pursued by the EU transport ministers, aims to eliminate any more traffic fatalities by 2050. This challenge is not easy, because despite a downward trend in the number of road deaths - from 19,193 in 1970 to 2,770 in 2024 - it is clear that efforts to increase road safety must constantly adapt.

The role of road users

What is particularly worrying is that 40% of accidents that occurred as a result of alcohol also resulted in personal injuries. In 2024, 198 people died, greatly increasing awareness of the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol. Additional attention is also being paid to the growing proportion of accidents involving e-bikes and e-scooters. Compared to conventional bicycles, e-bike riders are slightly more likely to be involved in accidents.

The recent accidents in Bingen are a sad example of how quickly dangerous situations can arise in road traffic. This makes it all the more important to raise awareness of safe driving behavior and take preventive measures. The police continue to investigate the incidents on the L 419, while the citizens of Bingen wait for the circumstances of these alarming events to be clarified.
