Discover Kirchheimbolanden's baroque terraced garden on July 17th!
A very special event awaits garden lovers in Kirchheimbolanden. On Thursday, July 17th, the RHEINPFALZ summer tour will take place in the baroque terraced garden from 4 p.m. This city's heart project provides a fascinating insight into the restoration work and ambitious plans for the future. Tatjana Fuchs, the project manager and qualified engineer for land conservation, will lead the tour. Participants can look forward to an exciting journey through the history and design of the garden, which is characterized by amphibians, impressive water art, a stone rotunda and curved lawn stairs.
The baroque terraced garden is not only architecturally remarkable, but also looks back on a long history. The development of Kirchheimbolanden began in the 12th century under the Lords of Bolanden. The city was granted city rights in 1368, and in the 18th century, during the reign of Prince Karl August von Nassau-Weilburg, the city experienced its peak, which is reflected, among other things, in the construction of the residential palace and the adjacent gardens. Becker and court gardener Ludwig Wilhelm Koeller, who was commissioned to design the palace gardens in 1746, combined the Baroque style with consideration of ecological aspects, which are still the focus of restoration work today.
Insights into garden restoration
The tour offers participants comprehensive information about the initial design levels of the garden, the selection of plants and trees, and the planned revitalization through water. The ecological challenge of this should not be underestimated, especially since unexpected finds are often made during restoration work. Baroque structures are suspected under the wine-growing area, some of which are very well preserved.
Particular attention is paid to four terraces, consistent with 18th century plans, and the central terrace wall with a “grotto work” and cascade as the centerpiece of the garden. Historic paths and flowerbeds that have been affected by subsequent wine uses also need to be uncovered, making the restoration work even more challenging.
Participation and further information
In order to take part in the tour, prior registration is necessary. This can be done from Monday, 9 a.m., by telephone on 06352 703521. The first 20 callers will receive a spot. The tour will last approximately one and a half hours and sturdy shoes, sun protection and drinks are recommended. The meeting point is at the large water basin behind the Ballhaus, which is easy to reach from Neumayerstrasse.
The city of Kirchheimbolanden is proud of its baroque terraced garden, which impresses not only with its historical significance but also with its beauty. As in other important historical gardens in Germany, this place attracts visitors who both appreciate the magnificent garden art and are interested in the living history of the region. Garden lovers who want to experience a moment of amazement should not miss this event!
