First Dialect Prize: Michael Landgraf inspires the Palatinate!
On June 16, 2025, Michael Landgraf was honored as the first winner of the BABBEL DOCH Mundart Prize. This award took place as part of the newly launched dialect festival “BABBEL DOCH”, which was celebrated from June 13th to 15th, 2025 in Neustadt an der Weinstraße. The prize honors personalities who have been committed to the Palatinate dialect over a long period of time. This was included in a celebratory awards ceremony led by Monji El Beji, a member of the organizing team and singer.
Michael Landgraf, writer from Neustadt an der Weinstraße, has published more than 20 books about the Palatinate and the Palatinate dialect in his 30 years of work, including a Palatinate volume published by Duden-Verlag. He has distinguished himself not only as an author, but also as a teacher, as he has been teaching Palatinate adult education courses for two decades and is jury speaker for the Dannstädter Höhe dialect competition.
Recognition for commitment
The award fills Landgraf with gratitude and he sees it as an incentive to continue to advocate for the dialect. “It is very important to me to keep the Palatinate language alive and to underline its relevance,” he said after the award ceremony. He also supports the Hiwwe-wie-Driwwe film series on a voluntary basis, as well as other dialect events, thus demonstrating a good knack for promoting regional culture.
The BABBEL DOCH Prize not only brings recognition but also benefits for the winners. You will receive free entry to the organizers' future festivals and concerts, which promotes networking within the dialect community. The prize is to be awarded annually in order to continue to honor outstanding personalities in the dialect.
Dialect festival and outlook
The festival itself offered a colorful mix of music and performances that were influenced by the Palatinate dialect. It has already been announced that the festival series will continue with further events to further celebrate the diversity of the dialect and bring people together. It will be exciting to see what new talent and stories the next year will bring.
Other dialect events such as the Bockenheim dialect days, which offer many surprises and innovations, are also very popular in the region. Here visitors can look forward to amusing contributions, such as a dialect sermon about absurd types of yogurt or anecdotes about strange experiences.
The lively dialect culture in the Palatinate is on the rise, and events like “BABBEL DOCH” give it its rightful place. You can find more information about this in Pfalz-Express, Wochenblatt Reporter and Rheinpfalz.
