Danger of thunderstorms in Rhineland-Palatinate: New heat wave is approaching!
Especially in these hot summer days, the weather is a hot topic in Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland. A heatwave is expected on July 8, 2025, causing temperatures to rise to up to 40 degrees, while thunderstorms and cooler nights are in the offing. Weather expert Dominik Jung has predicted temperatures of over 30 degrees in southern Germany this Saturday, which makes the living feeling almost unbearable. The course has already been set for the coming days: The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued an official heat warning that urges citizens to exercise caution.
It looks like Tuesday will be the peak of the heat wave with temperatures between 34 and 38 degrees, especially around 32 degrees at higher altitudes. Strong thunderstorms are expected in the evening, especially south of the Moselle, which could be accompanied by heavy rain, squalls and small-grain hail. These thunderstorms could bring some welcome relief, although it is to be hoped that they are not too severe.
Weather forecasts in detail
On Wednesday night the thunderstorms will subside and it will be mostly partly cloudy and dry, with minimum temperatures between 19 and 24 degrees, while the thermometer will drop to around 16 degrees in higher altitudes. Wednesday itself will show the heat wave in full force, with temperatures of 36 to 39 degrees, in the Upper Rhine even up to 40 degrees. Here it becomes difficult to find a cool breeze in some places.
From late afternoon onwards, showers or heat thunderstorms can also be expected over the mountains. On Thursday the weather will be changeable, with temperatures of 26 to 31 degrees and heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms. The wind will be light to moderate from the northwest, with stormy gusts expected during thunderstorms. On Friday the weather will calm down and it will be clear to sunny with temperatures between 23 and 28 degrees.
Climate change and its consequences
These extreme weather conditions are not only crazy, they are also a direct result of climate change. According to that Federal Environment Agency Excessive heat waves like the ones we are currently experiencing are on the rise in Germany. These climatic changes affect a variety of sectors, including agriculture, forestry and industry, and water availability also plays a crucial role.
The water supply is also particularly affected: The drought has led to the residents of Ludwigshafen being asked to water their street trees in order to keep the cityscape green and not to allow the ecological balance to become unbalanced. Loud Mercury June 2025 was already more than 2 degrees above the climate average, and significantly higher temperatures are also forecast for July.
Looking ahead to the next few weeks, we are more reliant than ever on our weather and the changes brought about by climate change. It remains to be hoped that the necessary adaptation strategies will be developed in time so that we can continue to move comfortably and safely through the hot summer days in the future.
