This commitment reflects the ongoing trend to increase the proportion of women in leadership positions. Since the Law on Leadership Positions (FüPoG) came into force in 2015, the proportion of women in management levels in the private sector, in the public service and in federal committees has grown continuously. The aim of the FüPoG is to promote equal rights for women and men, as stipulated in the Basic Law. The provisions of the law stipulate that from January 1, 2016, at least 30% of the seats on the supervisory boards of listed companies with equal co-determination must be held by women. Equal participation is also being sought in public administration, which is to be implemented by the end of 2025.
How are women in leadership positions doing?
Current studies show that despite these advances, there is still much to be done. A study by the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs (BMAS) and the Institute for Labor Market and Vocational Research (IAB) highlights the connection between the quality of work of employees and the economic success of companies. Women in leadership positions often achieve a higher quality of work, which promotes economic success. Nevertheless, the discrepancy between the proportion of women in the workforce and that in management levels is growing. The more women work in the company, the more likely they are to find themselves in managerial positions, according to the special report on equal opportunities.
As the City of Brandenburg reports, the topic of “women in leadership positions” is also becoming increasingly important in the public debate. This is evident not least in the large number of events dedicated to this topic. The panel discussion will be a further step towards increasing the visibility of women in leadership roles.
Another example of the positive development in this area is FüPoG II, which has been in force since August 2021. It expands the regulations of the original law and, among other things, introduces minimum participation quotas for boards of directors of listed companies. The law also provides for regulations in public administration that are intended to promote equality.
The Federal Government stay tuned, because the proportion of women in leadership positions is not only an issue of equality, but also of enormous social and economic importance. The coming developments could be crucial for equality in the future and will enable the full potential of all employees to be realized. It is therefore important to document progress and thus continue the dialogue.
All interested men and women are cordially invited to take part in the panel discussion and thus make a contribution to promoting equality. The more voices that speak out about this important issue, the faster we can bring about real change.
