BG Göttingen: promotion or relegation? ProA start in Koblenz is crucial!

The Göttingen basketball community, better known as the Violets, will start the new season of the BARMER 2nd Basketball Bundesliga ProA on September 28, 2025. At the start they travel to the EPG Baskets Koblenz. The game will take place at 5 p.m. in the EPG Arena and will be broadcast live on Sporteurope.tv. After a challenging year in which Göttingen was relegated from the top league, expectations are high. The fans have great hope in the team, which showed a strong performance against Telekom Baskets Bonn in the BBL Cup. This victory strengthens the confidence in the Violets ahead of the new season Göttingen Tageblatt reported.

Under the leadership of coach Fabian Strauß, BG Göttingen is entering the new season with fresh enthusiasm. The first home game after the opener on October 4th against the Tigers from Tübingen is already in the starting blocks. The fans' anticipation for the duel, which begins at 6:30 p.m., is already noticeable. The Violets are determined to build on their previous form and want to make their home venue - the Sparkasse Arena - a place of success again.

Opponents Koblenz and their strengths

The EPG Baskets Koblenz also started their new adventure with a full gift. They have regrouped after a difficult preseason in which they secured their place in the league in a three-point comparison. The new head coach Stephan Dohrn, who previously coached the Dragons Rhöndorf, brings a breath of fresh air. His two assistant coaches, K.J. Sherrill and Kai Schallenberg support him in his mission to move the team forward. BG Göttingen will face a team that is characterized by a free style of play and strong one-on-one players, as BG assistant coach Patrick Carney notes.

Koblenz performed mostly positively in the last preparatory games, with clear wins against ASC Theresianum Mainz, RheinStars Köln and GIESSEN 46ers. The team also includes some familiar faces: Baskets captain Badu Buck, most recently active with the Artland Dragons, and Alex Möller, a former Göttingen native, are part of the squad. In addition, several strong US players, including aggressive forward Tim Smith and talented guard Calvin Wishart, strengthen the team's new signings.

A look at the violets

The BG Göttingen looks back on a long tradition. Founded in 1974, the team has undergone remarkable development over the years. After relegation from the Bundesliga, it will be exciting to see how the Violets can assert themselves in the ProA. The club's management around general manager Frank Meinertshagen is also pursuing the goal of achieving direct promotion again.

In the first round of the ProA-XHURECHENDE, the focus is on teamwork and intensive play in order to collect important points right at the start of the season. The players are determined to use the good performance in the cup game as a basis for a successful season. And as the saying goes: you always have a second chance – BG Göttingen wants to grab it!

The next games and the development of the team are certainly worth a look. Stay tuned, because the violets still have a lot to do this season.
