Historic chain Listmann” closes branches: clearance sale is on!

There is sad news from the retail world in Cologne. The traditional chain “Listmann – Das Haus fürs Kreative” has announced that it will close three of its four branches. The clearance sale has already started on October 30, 2025 and is attracting numerous customers to the remaining stores.

The affected branches are in Mainz, Koblenz and Wiesbaden. While these locations will be closed, the branch in Aachen will remain under a new operator. Managing director Oliver Listmann said that it was time to give up as he could not find a successor and attempts to sell the company had failed. “We looked for solutions, but ultimately economic challenges, such as increased costs and changing purchasing behavior, have put a strain on our business over the years,” explained Listmann.

Impact on the workforce

A total of 115 employees, including 75 permanent employees and 40 temporary employees, will lose their jobs. The main location in Mainz, where 50 employees are employed, is particularly affected. This is a hard blow for many who have developed close ties to the company over the years.

A look into the history of Listmann

The company has a long history that began in 1889 when it was founded as a wholesale hardware and building hardware company. In the 1960s, Listmann transformed itself into a self-service store for construction and DIY supplies, and in the 1990s it finally focused on art supplies, crafts, office supplies and gifts. This long-standing tradition makes the closure all the more painful for loyal customers and employees.

Market changes and their causes

The challenges that “Listmann” was confronted with are typical for many retailers today. Customers are changing their purchasing behavior and the economic circumstances are putting pressure on the industry. The shift to online shopping and higher operating costs are contributing to many stores struggling to survive.

Even if the closures mark a painful decline, management hopes that the remaining stores can continue to flourish and that customers will continue to find a good hand for creative products, especially in Aachen, where the branch remains under new management. It remains to be seen how the market and the creative industry will develop in the future.
