Vladimir Kornéev impresses with Kurt Weill: Youkali” in Landau!

On December 11, 2025, the cultural scene in Landau will look forward to a special highlight: the Georgian chanson singer and actor Vladimir Kornéev will present his program “Youkali” in the Old Department Store. This musical portrait is dedicated to the great composer Kurt Weill, whose works still cause a sensation today. From 8 p.m. the curtain opens on an evening full of musical discoveries and emotional depths.

Kurt Weill, born in Dessau in 1900 and died in New York in 1950, is one of the most important composers of the 20th century. He began his career in Berlin in the 1920s, where he enjoyed great success with masterpieces such as The Threepenny Opera. But the political climate changed dramatically: in 1933 his works were banned and burned by the Nazis. Fleeing the terror, Weill found a new home, first in Paris and later in the USA, where he revolutionized musical theater. With plays that received outstanding attention both on Broadway and in Hollywood, he strived until his death for the perfect fusion of text, scene and music.

Cultural heritage and musical journey

“Youkali” is not just a concert, but also a homage to Weill’s life’s work and his vision of a utopian country in which all people find hearing, love and freedom. The title is inspired by a song of the same name from 1934, which was written in exile. Kornéev impressively brings Weill's music back to today with his "incredibly nuanced multi-octave voice" and thus demonstrates the universal language of music. He will be accompanied by Markus Syperek on the piano, who will bring out the melodic peculiarities of Weill's compositions excellently.

The event on the occasion of Kurt Weill's 125th birthday represents a unique opportunity to experience his distinctive music. Tickets are available at the Tourism Office in Landau Town Hall and online in the ticket shop. Remember to also take a look at the cultural program of the city of Landau so that you don't miss any other highlights!

A place in history

Kurt Weill's innovative musicals, which were often combined with the texts of Bertolt Brecht or other well-known authors, still leave a lasting impression today. From “The Threepenny Opera” to “Lost in the Stars,” his plays have thrilled generations of artists and audiences. His striving to combine text and melody in harmonious unity is a legacy that lives on in concerts like “Youkali”.

The anticipation for December is growing, and the culture lovers in Landau can hardly wait to immerse themselves in the world of Kurt Weill with Vladimir Kornéev and his musical performances. Perhaps one or two visitors will be inspired to discover their own “Youkali” – the utopia in which music knows no boundaries.
