Kohl's grandson Johannes Volkmann: A new departure in the Bundestag!
Johannes Volkmann, the grandson of former Chancellor Helmut Kohl, is new to the German Bundestag. At the young age of 28, he brings a breath of fresh air to political Berlin and describes his first 100 days as a member of parliament as a “departure”. This is reported by the Rhine Palatinate. Born in Cologne, Volkmann has his roots in Ludwigshafen and currently lives in Hesse, from where he works passionately for the CDU.
A look at his impressive biography shows: Johannes Volkmann grew up in Lahnau and graduated from the Landgraf-Ludwigs-Gymnasium in Gießen in 2014. He also became active in the Hessen Student Union at the age of 12 and later took on various positions within the young union. After studying economics, politics and sociology at the Zeppelin University of Friedrichshafen and a master's degree in Contemporary China Studies at the University of Oxford, he was able to gain a wide range of experience. Particularly noteworthy are his work as office manager for the CDU MEP Sven Simon and his involvement in the Lahn-Dill district council, where he has held the chairmanship since 2021.
Political ambitions and challenges
Before his election as a member of the Bundestag, Volkmann came into the political spotlight as a candidate in the European elections and the 2021 federal election. In the 2025 federal election, he received an impressive 34.3 percent of the first votes in the Lahn-Dill constituency, which secured him entry into the Bundestag. In his new position, he works as a full member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Committee for Economic Cooperation and Development and is also a deputy on the Committee for Culture and Media. His goal for the future is to be a strong voice for the interests of people in Germany and beyond.
“Departure” – this is how Volkmann describes the beginning of his term in office. It's clear that he feels the expectations associated with his famous grandfather. Helmut Kohl, who served as Federal Chancellor from 1982 to 1998 and went down in history as the “Chancellor of Unity,” had a lasting impact on Germany’s political landscape. During his time he introduced the reunification of Germany as well as important reforms in social and economic policy. At 16 years old, Kohl was the longest-serving chancellor in the Federal Republic, which always makes his grandson proud, but he goes his own way, fully motivated and with a clear focus on the challenges of today.
Commitment to social issues
Last but not least, his involvement in local politics, especially after the attack on Ukraine, shows Volkmann's commitment. Here he was significantly involved in local aid deliveries and initiated a town partnership with Brovary. Such measures demonstrate his conviction that political work should always be in the service of the citizens.
With his motivation and experience from various political offices, Johannes Volkmann is ready to take on the challenges of the present. For the CDU state chairmen, the parliament and of course for the voters in the Lahn-Dill district, he will certainly remain an interesting figure who will bring a breath of fresh air into the political discussion. It remains exciting to see how he can merge his grandfather's values with today's reality.
