New board of the Mainz University Medical Center: Kreutzer and Weinberg take over!

In an important restructuring, the Mainz University Medical Center is presenting itself with new faces at the top. On July 1, 2025, Kathleen Kreutzer, who previously worked as head of the construction and facility management department at Ulm University Hospital, will take over the position of board member for construction and infrastructure. At the same time, Dr. Stephan Weinberg, who has been State Secretary in the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Finance since 2016, will take over as commercial director from March 2026. These changes correspond to the requirements of the amendment to the University Medicine Act (UMG), as Unimedizin Mainz reports.

With an impressive construction master plan that provides for around 2.2 billion euros in investments by 2040, Kreutzer will take care of the urgently needed renovation of the university clinic, which is in need of renovation. These investments are not only a challenge, but also an opportunity for the institution, which is known far beyond the borders of Rhineland-Palatinate. The Mainz University Medicine is the largest participation in the state and plays a central role in the region's healthcare.

Experiences and responsibilities

Both new board members bring a lot of expertise with them. Kreutzer not only has many years of experience in the university hospital sector, but also brings valuable knowledge from her time in the Bad Wurzach city building department. Your position as board member for construction and infrastructure was created by the new legal regulations in order to better meet the specific challenges of university medicine.

Dr. Weinberg will be particularly responsible for consolidating finances, a major task given the current challenges in the healthcare sector. With a basic salary of 290,000 euros as well as variable salary components, he will have to bear comprehensive responsibility, while Kreutzer will start the new challenges with 180,000 euros plus a bonus, as Bibliomedmanager shows.

The role of university medicine

The entire Mainz University Medical Center is not only a central player in healthcare, but also an important training location for more than 3,600 students and 630 specialists every year. This makes the facility one of the largest employers in the region with around 8,700 employees. In times when the shortage of skilled workers has a strong impact on the healthcare sector, as kma emphasizes, the continuous expansion and modernization of the infrastructure is even more important.

The Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs has already made clear the importance of university medicine in a position paper and is calling for a reform of the DRG system to better reflect the increased costs of maximum care providers. These reforms could make a significant contribution to strengthening university hospitals and consolidating their role in the German healthcare system.

With the appointment of Kreutzer and Weinberg, Mainz University Medicine shows that it is ready to meet the challenges of the future and continue to play a key role in sanitation and the training of healthcare professionals. At a time when healthcare is under scrutiny, it remains to be seen how these new governance structures will perform.
