New management team for Mainz University Medicine: focus on construction and finances!

A lot is happening at the Mainz University Medical Center! On July 1, 2023, Kathleen Kreutzer will take up her new role as head of construction for the university medicine department to lead the extensive renovation of the clinic. This new board position for construction and infrastructure is part of an ambitious plan to modernize the clinic, which is partly in need of renovation. The master plan envisages investments of around 2.2 billion euros by 2040 in order to significantly improve medical care and research capacities. This reports KMA.

Kreutzer brings a wealth of experience with him. The architect was previously head of the construction and building management department at Ulm University Hospital and head of the city building authority in Bad Wurzach, Baden-Württemberg. With an annual base salary of 180,000 euros and a variable salary of up to 40,000 euros, she will not only be responsible for the renovation, but also ensure that everything goes according to plan. Clemens Hoch, the chairman of the supervisory board, emphasizes the importance of the new board members for economic consolidation and structural restructuring so that the university medicine remains fit for the future.

Change at the commercial top

In the shadow of these changes, Dr. Waltraud Kreutz-Gers, the current commercial director, will retire by the end of February 2026. Your successor, Dr. Stephan Weinberg will take office on March 1, 2026. Weinberg, a doctor of law, has a lot of experience in the financial sector and has been State Secretary in the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Finance since 2016. His area of responsibility will be the consolidation of the University Medical Center's finances, which is of great importance in times like these.

Another highlight: Weinberg receives an annual basic salary of 290,000 euros and a variable salary of up to 60,000 euros. His extensive knowledge of finance, law and economics, coupled with his committee work, gives hope for an effective term in office.

Investment strategy for the future

The Mainz University Medical Center is the largest hospital in the country and has impressively demonstrated its performance in the past, especially during the corona pandemic. Planned investments of over 2 billion euros are intended to help modernize the infrastructure and redesign the buildings. The aim is to establish modern healthcare and to deal carefully with monument protection. Construction of the central building, which will form the heart of the new clinic, is scheduled to begin in 2026, with completion by 2031. Existing buildings will be replaced, new research facilities will be built and interim buildings will be created for operating rooms and intensive care medicine in order to ensure modern care. Details about this comprehensive project can be found at Press University of Mainz.

With these changes, a breath of fresh air is blowing through the Mainz University Medical Center. Both the new construction director and the incoming commercial director face enormous challenges, but also great opportunities to make the facility fit for the future. It will be exciting to see how the plans develop in the coming years!
