An exciting spectacle is about to begin! The Chawwerusch Theater from the Southern Palatinate will take viewers on a moving journey through time in the courtyard of the Mainz State Museum on September 13th and 14th, 2025. As part of the Rhineland-Palatinate Cultural Summer, the play “Rausch der Freiheit” will be performed, which is told on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the German Peasants' War of 1525. Directed by Susanne Schmelcher and with music by Nina Wurman, moving images of forgotten fighters of the Peasants' War are created.
Let's take a look at the plot: Farmer Jakob, the central character, reads about the peasant unrest in the Palatinate, which inspires him to the freedom goals of this time. This production not only addresses the fight against a centuries-old system of injustice, but also takes the audience into the history and motivation of those citizens, farmers and the downtrodden who rebelled against the nobility and the church. The German Peasants' War, the events of which are covered in the play, was a series of uprisings that took place in many regions of Germany from 1524 to 1526.
