There is a big celebration going on at the Alfred Grosser School Center in Bad Bergzabern these days. The occasion is the 500th anniversary of the school, which has its origins in a Latin school founded in 1525. The celebrations also include the high school's jazz combo, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. An anniversary concert will take place on June 28, 2025, starting at 6 p.m. in the guest's house. Admission is free, donations are welcome. Former members of the combo are invited to join the current musicians in demonstrating how vibrant the tradition of jazz is at this school.[Meeting point Palatinate]
The anniversary concert will be hosted by Dr. Ben Nichols, a renowned saxophonist and composer, accompanied. Nichols has performed in many major concert halls and jazz festivals worldwide and is known for his impressive sound and thrilling stage presence. The assistant professor at Brigham Young University has already conducted a workshop for the jazz combo in May 2024 and will enrich the celebrations with his infectious energy.[Jazz Combo]
The jazz combo in detail
The jazz combo at Alfred-Grosser High School was founded in 2000 with just nine seventh graders. Since then it has developed into a classic big band, which currently includes around 50 students. These rehearsals take place regularly on Fridays, with additional rehearsals also taking place for concerts, particularly before Christmas and every two years in Mallorca. In April 2026, the ensemble will travel to Mallorca for the tenth time - a tradition that brings with it many great memories.
The students in the jazz combo mostly learned to play their instrument in the wind class of the 5th grade, and around five students per year take part in the combo, especially in grades 7 to 9. Their repertoire ranges from swing to rock and pop to funk - real musical diversity that delights listeners.[Meeting point Palatinate]
