E-bike theft in Bad Bergzabern: 2,200 euro Pedelec stolen!

A brazen theft occurred in Bad Bergzabern on the night of August 14th to 15th, 2025. Unknown perpetrators broke into a garage on Haydnstrasse and made off with a blue Fischer Pedelec. The e-bike is worth around 2,200 euros, which represents a significant loss for the owner. The Bad Bergzabern police station is now urgently looking for whistleblowers who might know something about the crime. Witnesses are asked to call 06343 93340 or email pibadbergzabern@polizei.rlp.de.

But what exactly makes Pedelecs so popular? They are very popular because they support cycling, especially in urban areas where there are often uphill climbs or longer distances have to be covered. Conventional Pedelecs support a maximum speed of around 25 km/h, while high-speed Pedelecs (S-Pedelecs) can even reach up to 45 km/h. The latter have additional requirements, including type approval and the need to ride on the road, which makes them even more interesting for many cyclists. Helmets are not mandatory for conventional Pedelecs, but for S-Pedelecs we recommend a robust model like those found on motorcycles.

Increased demand for e-bikes

The increasing interest in e-bikes is reflected not only in demand, but also in the number of thefts. More and more cyclists are seeing the advantage of Pedelecs as a way to get through the city quickly and in an environmentally friendly way. They are particularly popular for those who don't want to put in unnecessary effort. The tables below provide an overview of the different types of Pedelecs and their requirements.

type.type Maximum speed Services Special features
Conventional Pedelecs 25 km/h 250W No helmet requirement, no insurance necessary
High-speed Pedelecs (S-Pedelecs) 45 km/h 500W Type approval, helmet requirement, insurance required

Given the attractive advantages of Pedelecs, it is not surprising that thieves also keep an eye on them. Therefore, owners are urged to secure their e-bikes well and be more careful. The police hope for the public's help to prevent such crimes.
