Rheingau line RB10: New train drivers should stop train cancellations!

From Monday, August 18th, there will be some improvements in rail transport on the Rheingau line RB10 between Frankfurt and Neuwied. The operator Vias not only hired seven train drivers as temporary workers, but also hired three newly trained train drivers. With a total of ten additional train drivers, the reliability of driving operations should increase significantly. However, there are some restrictions in the timetable until September 26th. These particularly affect times outside of student and commuter peaks, where up to eight trips in each direction from Monday to Friday will be canceled. Some of these trips will be replaced by buses.

There are currently 16 vehicles available, which can occasionally result in space limitations. In addition, further reductions must be expected in the late evening and night hours due to construction work by DB Infra GO. In recent weeks, passengers have repeatedly suffered from delays and cancellations resulting from last-minute rescheduling and patchy coordination. But Vias has agreed on fixed coordination dates with DB Infra GO, so the situation is expected to ease after September 26th.

New business manager and more flexible plans

With Andreas Pietsch, Vias has now appointed a new manager for operations in the Rheingau and Odenwald. In addition, additional temporary workers are to be hired for the control position of the railcars in the coming months. In order to be able to react flexibly to disruptions, a duty roster concept was developed in collaboration with the works council and the employees. However, it is clear that the establishment of additional bus services will not be pursued further because what is often overlooked is that trains generally reach their destination faster than replacement buses.

District Administrator Sandro Zehner (CDU) viewed the announced improvements as the result of his crisis talks since May 2024. He emphasizes the importance of reliability for students and parents, especially for fifth graders in secondary schools. This is an aspect that matters more than ever in times like these, where the reliability of public transport plays a central role in everyday life.

A look outside the box

It remains to be hoped that the efforts of Vias and the actors involved will bear fruit and that smooth operations on the Rheingau line can soon be guaranteed. After all, a solid connection is of enormous importance not only for commuters, but for the entire region.
