Another earthquake over Moersdorf: Region feels tremors!

There was a lot of movement near the tranquil Hunsrück village of Mörsdorf at the weekend: two earthquakes shook the region. Both quakes had a magnitude of 1.7 and occurred on Sunday morning, specifically at 6:33 a.m. and 6:43 a.m. Bernd Schmidt from the Rhineland-Palatinate State Earthquake Service confirmed the seismic events, which probably came as a surprise to many residents.

As reported in the Rhein-Zeitung, the depth of the earthquake is around 9 kilometers. These are not isolated incidents; the region has recorded a series of earthquakes in recent days. The night before, at 4:43 a.m. and a short time later at 4:33 a.m., there were also two earthquakes of identical strength in Moersdorf.

Frequent earthquake activity in the region

The recent quakes are part of a series of seismic activities in Rhineland-Palatinate. According to data from the Rhineland-Palatinate State Earthquake Service, there have been numerous smaller earthquakes in the region since September 21, 2025. For example, an earthquake with a magnitude of 0.7 was recorded in Moersdorf on September 26th, as well as further tremors on the following days. These earthquakes are usually not strong enough to cause significant damage, but can still be felt, especially by surrounding populations.

The online map of the EU Inspire Geoportal shows that these earthquake activities have been documented in the region since 2000. The measurement network is specifically designed for Rhineland-Palatinate and registers earthquakes that occur in the area. Only the seismic events that are classified according to the criteria of DIN 4149:2005-04 are listed, while non-tectonic events are not taken into account.

The whole thing reminds us that the earth does not always stand still, even in a more rural area like the Hunsrück. Maybe it's time to take a closer look at the topic of earthquakes - knowing that movement occasionally comes into play here too.
