Storm warning! There is a risk of heavy rain and thunderstorms in the west
A rapid change in the weather is imminent after a sunny weekend spoiled us. From today, September 9, 2025, heavy rain and thunderstorms can be expected in western Germany, especially in North Rhine-Westphalia and northern Rhineland-Palatinate. The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued the highest warning level, purple alert, and the population in the Ahrweiler district and other affected regions have been urgently warned to prepare for risky weather conditions. Loud Focus Between 50 and 80 liters of rain per square meter can fall in just six hours, in some places even up to 90 liters.
The districts of Heinsberg, Düren, Rhein-Erft-Kreis and the city of Cologne are particularly affected, as there are warnings about possible floods and landslides. This could have serious consequences for road safety as there is a risk of aquaplaning on wet roads. The DWD strongly recommends that residents avoid driving and reduce time outdoors to minimize the risk. The meteorologists have also forecast the first strong thunderstorms for the afternoon and evening Mercury reported.
Alert levels and precautions
The storm doesn't just bring with it striking color coding. The purple alert applies in ten districts, which also includes the Ahr Valley. There is a red alert in 31 other districts, including cities such as Mönchengladbach and Düsseldorf. History shows that we have to be seriously careful - the warnings bring back memories of the devastating flood disaster in July 2021 in the Ahr Valley, in which 135 people lost their lives. The destruction is far from over and many construction sites are still active.
The forecast for the coming days shows that Tuesday will be heavily cloudy with showery rain and maximum temperatures between 18 and 22 degrees. On Wednesday there will be varying to heavy clouds with long-lasting rain in the south. There could be another showery thunderstorm on Thursday.
Disaster protection in the region
The municipal fire departments are already in close contact with the fire and disaster inspector while inspection trips are planned. The technical operations management team is also activated in order to be prepared for all eventualities. The population is once again asked to keep themselves up to date using warning apps such as NINA, KATWARN and the “My Levels” app. A look at the Severe Weather Center also provides around-the-clock information about upcoming storms and current weather advisories.
The coming hours and days may be challenging, but with the right precautions and a close eye on warnings, we can hope to get through the storms safely. Stay informed and take care of yourself and those around you!
