Christa Bernardi: New headmistress with a breath of fresh air in Speyer!
There are big changes at the Edith Stein girls' high school in Speyer: Christa Bernardi is taking over the management of the traditional school. The change comes after the death two years ago of Andreas Kotulla, who had previously headed the school for a long time. Bernardi, who applied for the office, is convinced that she is “the right person at the right time in the right place,” as she emphasized in her first statement. The school community and the school authority fully support her application, which makes the anticipation for the coming years tangible. There are currently 642 students attending the school, which is looked after by almost 60 teachers, a good mix that can have a positive influence on the learning atmosphere.
The Edith Stein Girls' High School is very popular not only in Speyer, but also beyond the city limits. The school is recognized as a Catholic girls' school and places particular emphasis on in-depth training in various disciplines. The Archbishop's Edith Stein High School in Munich, which was founded in 1847, could serve as a model. It offers a variety of school branches, including linguistics, science and technology, and economics and social sciences.
A look at the offers
There are currently 590 students and 54 teachers enrolled in Munich. Subjects such as English, Latin and French, as well as physics and chemistry, are taught here. Promoting music with the help of a musical class for grades 5 and 6 could be an inspiring example for Bernardi to establish similar creative approaches at ESG.

- Naturwissenschaftlich-technologischer Zweig
- Wirtschafts- und sozialwissenschaftlicher Zweig
Another highlight are the diverse elective subjects, including Italian, Spanish and various sports. Social commitment is very important: student exchange programs and internships in social institutions not only offer practical experience, but also promote the social awareness of the students.
The importance of education
The overall educational situation in Germany is significant, as the data from destatis show. The entire school landscape is constantly evolving. High school graduates can orient themselves into the future via various paths and need a good basis for their decisions.
The challenges associated with running a school should not be underestimated. However, Bernardi has the necessary knack for turning her vision for the Edith Stein Girls' High School into reality. With the support of the entire school community, it will be exciting to see how she will develop the school and what course she sets for future generations.
