Speyer becomes a basketball mecca: 36 teams at the youth tournament!

Last weekend, the SG Towers Speyer-Schifferstadt youth tournament offered a real basketball treat. Under the sweaty cheers of the fans, a total of 36 teams in four age groups competed in six competitions. As the Rhine Palatinate reported, the tournament started with a thrilling opening game between the hosts' under-16s and TV Oppenheim, both of whom gave their all to get off to a good start.

Basketball was played at the highest level in four sports halls in Speyer. The Towers have been the driving force behind this event for many years, benefiting not only the teams but also the entire area basketball community. Around 50 teams were active last weekend, which shows that basketball is very popular in Speyer and Schifferstadt. The atmosphere was electric, with numerous exciting games on all fields.

The event and the ball school

A highlight that shouldn't go unmentioned is: TOWERS Ball School, which was launched in November 2023. Under the guidance of coach Mike Gould, anyone of any age can learn the basics of basketball. Training takes place every Friday from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the hall of the State Study Seminar in Speyer. This initiative contributes to the further promotion of young talent and ensures that the young talent is well prepared for the upcoming tournaments.

As was shown last weekend, the Towers are not just an ordinary club, they are a real attraction for the basketball community. Players of all ages come together to show off their skills and learn from each other. The future of basketball in the region is therefore secured.

Looking back and looking ahead

While last weekend in Speyer was all about basketball, it was just a little more than three years ago 1st GroBi Basketball Tournament took place in the small sports hall of the Albert Einstein School in Groß-Bieberau. At that time there were six teams at the start and the atmosphere was also characterized by great enthusiasm. The organizer, Pastor Sebastian Bähringer, and his colleague Kristina von Hoff were very satisfied with the organization of the tournament and the support from local sponsors.

The success of the tournament in Speyer gives hope for further exciting events in the future. It can be expected that SG Towers Speyer-Schifferstadt will continue to be a center for youth basketball and produce many more talents. Stay tuned – not just for basketball, but also for upcoming events!
