Blood donation hero: Peter Lucas brings life to Deidesheim!
The citizens of the Deidesheim community are characterized not only by their hospitality, but also by their commitment to a particularly altruistic act: blood donation. A remarkable number of donors, up to 150, have enriched the lives of others over the years through their giving. This includes Peter Lucas, who is at the forefront with an impressive 176 blood donations and is even aiming to break the 200 mark. This is what our colleagues report Rhine Palatinate.
Peter Lucas's contributions do not go unnoticed: 53 regular donors have already been honored by the Red Cross. Lucas, who discovered his passion for blood donation at the age of 18 inspired by his father, has donated an impressive 88 liters of blood to date. That's about half the size of a bathtub or nine crates of export beer!
The process of donating blood
What exactly happens when you make a donation? Lucas describes his experience as painless and quick – the entire procedure usually only takes five to six minutes. After the donation, the helpers always receive a little refreshment: chocolate, a packed lunch and something to drink. It is also important to mention that various health checks are carried out before each donation and donors must fill out an extensive questionnaire. The system has now changed from the usual questions on a DIN A4 sheet to four sheets with changing questions.
Health care is Lucas’ top priority. He reports that he has no problems with his circulation and sees himself as a “helper type”. This commitment is not only reflected in donating blood, but also as a driver of the community bus in Deidesheim, where he regularly lends a hand to older citizens.
Blood donations in Germany are declining
The appeal to the population to get more involved in donating blood will be particularly important in the coming months. Donors are in greater demand than ever, especially during the holiday season, when blood supplies are often more limited. Peter Lucas and his colleagues from Deidesheim are doing their part to ensure that supplies remain secure.
