New residential and commercial building in Leiwen: Sustainability for the future!

In Leiwen, where the Römerstrasse is now blossoming, a new residential and commercial building will soon be built that will not only create modern living space, but also strengthen the local infrastructure. The groundbreaking ceremony for this ambitious project took place on Monday morning and is being realized by Sparkasse Trier, in collaboration with the general contractor Müller Bau and the local community of Leiwen. The building will include six barrier-free residential units and meets the high sustainability standards of the KfW efficiency standard 40 QNG, which earns the project the prestigious Sustainable Building quality seal, as 5vier.de reports.

“We urgently need more living space,” explains District Administrator Stefan Metzdorf, who praises the project as a defining example of sustainable development in the region. The Sparkasse branch will be housed on the ground floor of the new building, together with the mayor's office and a tourist information center, which will enhance the citizen service in Leiwen. With total project costs of around 4.65 million euros, construction is estimated to take around two years. Completion and the first tenants moving in are planned for spring 2027.

Sustainability and funding in new buildings

The topic of sustainability is not only important for the community of Leiwen, but also for many people interested in building. The newly married couple Julius and Emilie Schröder attach particular importance to environmentally friendly living. When looking for a condominium, they chose a property with efficiency house level 40 and the Sustainable Building Plus (QNG-PLUS) quality seal. “The sustainable standards do incur additional costs,” admits Emilie, “but the future-proof construction is worth it.” They also benefit from the KfW funding “Climate-Friendly New Buildings – Residential Buildings”, which was suggested to them during the viewing, as kfw.de explains/).

The Schröders' apartment is heated using a heat pump and is largely made of wood, which contributes to a low ecological footprint. They also generate their own electricity using a photovoltaic system. Before signing the purchase agreement, they also sought advice from their bank about taking advantage of the KfW home ownership program.

With projects like the one in Leiwen and the commitment of couples like the Schröders, it is clear that the trend towards sustainable construction is gaining more and more traction. It will be exciting to see how these changes will shape the region in the coming years.
