Pulvermaar: Germany's insider tip for wild swimmers!
The Pulvermaar in Rhineland-Palatinate is currently considered an insider tip for swimmers and nature lovers. According to a ranking by Icelandair, this special place is ranked third among pristine wild swimming destinations. With an area of almost 39 hectares and a depth of 72 meters, the Pulvermaar is one of the deepest bodies of water in Germany and offers its visitors a harmonious environment surrounded by beech forests. Nevertheless, interest in it remains surprisingly low - worldwide the region only records 480 searches per year, while Lake Drīdzis in Latvia takes second place in the ranking with 360 searches. Mercury reports on the evaluation methodology, in which a total of 40 wild bathing locations were identified and classified according to their search volume.
The Pulvermaar natural outdoor pool opened its doors on May 17, 2025 and provides refreshment and fun for young and old. Visitors can not only swim here, but also boat or fish. In addition, access for people with disabilities is guaranteed through appropriate entry into the water. After a leisurely swim, guests can make themselves comfortable on the well-kept lawns or fortify themselves with coffee and cake in the cafeteria - an outdoor terrace offers a wonderful view of the maar. Healthy through swimming
Swimming is not only refreshing, but also extremely healthy. The latest studies show that just 20 minutes of moderate swimming has positive effects on cognitive performance. If you swim regularly, you can sustainably improve your mental fitness. In addition, swimming increases blood flow to the brain and ensures better concentration. The complex movement sequences in the water also promote motor skills and mindfulness - great benefits for body and mind, which are further supported by wild swimming in the Pulvermaar. AOK also highlights that swimming can help reduce stress and improve quality of life.
So while the Pulvermaar ranks third among undiscovered swimming spots, it remains a worthwhile destination for those who love nature and want to reap the health benefits of swimming. A visit not only offers the opportunity to refresh yourself in the cool water, but also to enjoy the breathtaking nature around Germany's deepest maar.
