Frank Schumann: Discover the treasures of Worms and Martin Luther!
No matter where you look, the city of Worms has an eventful history that has fascinated generations of people. In the heart of this city lives Frank Schumann, a passionate collector who has dedicated himself to the exciting task of documenting the history of his hometown. In 1983, in the context of the Luther Year, he began collecting stamps associated with Martin Luther. Since then, Schumann has expanded his collection considerably and has also become interested in the history of the city of Worms. He has now collected over 1,500 collector's items relating to Luther, although the number of items relating to the city's history is still growing.
But what drives Schumann? His passion for history and the desire to keep Worm's historical identity alive give his collecting work a special meaning. He not only collects stamps, but also historical postcards, letters and contemporary witness reports with which he wants to paint a comprehensive picture of the city's history. He is also actively looking for old postcards and photos that document Worms' historical heritage. “If anyone has something that they can provide to me, I would be happy to take it up,” says the collector. Anyone who would like to support Schumann can contact him at Weißheimerstraße 76 in Worms.
The story of Worms
Worms is not only the home of Martin Luther, but also the scene of numerous historical events that have shaped the city. The Reichstag of 1521, at which Luther defended his teachings before Emperor Charles V, is probably the most famous event. But other significant events, such as the Worms Concordat of 1122 or the Reichstag of 1495, at which Emperor Maximilian I initiated comprehensive imperial reforms, also influenced the city's fortunes. Worms' roots go back to 5000 BC, when the first settlements emerged in the region. Over the course of the millennium, Worms developed into a cultural and political center.
Another impressive highlight of the city is Worms Cathedral, whose origins date back to 614 AD. The cathedral, which has been rebuilt several times, is a symbol of the city's rich history and architecture. The ShUM sites in Worms, Speyer and Mainz testify to the important role of the Jewish communities in the region and were even recognized as a world heritage site by UNESCO in 2021.
A look into the future
Schumann is not only a keeper of the past, but also someone who looks to the future. His collection is constantly growing as he is always looking for new objects and evidence of the city's history. The dedicated collector has created a Lutheran-free area on the ground floor of his home, while the upstairs room is dedicated to Luther collectibles. “The Luther collection belongs there, everything else is on the ground floor,” he explains with a smile.
The Nibelungen saga and the associated festivals, which continue to keep the city's stories alive, are just part of the legacy that Frank Schumann and other history lovers want to preserve. The special treasure of memories and stories contained in the collections can delight not only die-hard history fans but also the curious and invite them to learn more about the city and its past.
Worms is more than just a city - it is a living history book waiting to write many more chapters. And Frank Schumann is one of the central narrators of this story, documenting the rich history of his city in loving detail.
