General renovation of the barracks in Zweibrücken: Progress by 2040!
A lot is happening in Zweibrücken, and not just in terms of the weather! The Niederauerbachkaserne, the Bundeswehr's landmark in the city, is about to undergo extensive general renovation, which is scheduled to be completed by 2040. As [SWR](https://www.swr.de/swraktuell/rheinland-pfalz/kaiserslautern/bundeswehrkaserne-in-zweibruecken-auerbach-soll-bis-2040-generalsaniert- Werden-100.html) reports, the administrative buildings are in a truly dilapidated condition and urgently need a new coat of paint. Thomas Krüger, the deputy regimental commander, admits that little has happened in the past - because of finances. Since the abolition of compulsory military service, the Bundeswehr has made significant savings, which also has an impact on the structural condition of the barracks.
But now we are taking a big step: around 130 million euros are to be invested in the renovation and modernization of the barracks over the next five years. In addition, the chapel has already been renovated and will be ceremoniously inaugurated in the summer of 2024. The gymnasium has also been given a new look, which will certainly benefit the soldiers.
Renovation in stages
Things will really start from 2026: demolition and new construction work will be carried out, and this will all be done in stages so that the soldiers can be accommodated at all times. An important aspect of the new buildings is that they must meet the requirements of monument protection. The dimensions preserved are a basic requirement for the new buildings. This is not an easy undertaking, as many of the existing barracks buildings date from the 1930s and require extensive renovation work.
But it's not just the buildings that are on the list of modernization projects - the military training area is also receiving an update to meet modern training requirements. Despite the structural defects, the soldiers feel comfortable in Zweibrücken. The barracks are currently at 90 percent capacity, a sign that things are going well here. There are only two Bundeswehr locations in Germany with paratroopers, and Zweibrücken is one of them, which underlines the importance of the barracks.
The shadows of the past
A print magazine even dubbed the barracks a “horror barracks,” which was derived from Google reviews of the grievances. However, Krüger is optimistic that these problems have been resolved and that soldiers will soon be able to work under better conditions.
The coming years promise to be an exciting chapter for the Niederauerbach barracks. A good reason to take a close look at developments and perhaps even take a look behind the scenes when progress becomes visible. It's definitely not just about concrete and cement - it's about the future of the soldiers and strengthening the Bundeswehr in our region!
