Citizens' protest in Landsweiler: New plans for an outdoor swimming pool are causing a stir!
In Landsweiler speeches, the plans for a new outdoor swimming pool are on the brink, which is arousing the minds of local residents. On Wednesday, around 50 people, mainly older citizens from Schiffweiler, demonstrated against the renovation of the dilapidated outdoor swimming pool, which is to be demolished. This small but determined protest was organized by the citizens' initiative to preserve the old outdoor swimming pool. Many of the demonstrators express concerns about the planned new building, which is ultimately seen as more than just displacing traditional swimming.
The main points of criticism include concerns about vermin from the planned natural water basin and the loss of features that are characteristic of the region - such as access from a warmed hall to a preheated water area. Instead of the valued 50-meter swimming pool, which is dear to many residents, a combination area with a beach and children's area is planned. The new swimming pool will only be 25 meters long, which means a reduction in swimming area by a whopping 60%. Michael Bost from the Volksbad citizens' initiative clearly pointed out these shortcomings and gives the planned arrangement little chance.
The dialogue with the community
Mayor Cedric Jochum (CDU) sought discussions with the protesters and held individual discussions to hear their concerns. The argument for the new building lies primarily in the high costs of alternatives and the poor condition of the old outdoor pool. The total amount for the renovation is estimated at 6.6 million euros, with a large part being borne by the federal and state governments. The work is expected to be completed by the end of next year.
Reports about the disputes surrounding the outdoor pool can already be heard in the community. A criminal complaint against the previous mayor Markus Fuchs (SPD) is still pending, resulting from disputes over the renovation. While the investigation is ongoing, it appears as if it could come to an end without any tangible consequences.
The outdoor pool culture in Germany
Outdoor swimming pools have a long tradition in Germany - they are an expression of a lively summer culture and indispensable in every city. In the period from the invention of the outdoor pool in the early 19th century to today, over 3,500 outdoor pools testify to a consistent need and popularity. The German outdoor pool culture includes not only swimming, but also social gatherings and sports. The visits often begin with a picnic before going into the water, and the discussion about the rule “not to go into the water for an hour after eating” sounds familiar to most people.
The importance of these places extends far beyond swimming. Typical snacks such as fries with mayo or a bratwurst are not only important for the little ones. There is even a song about it known in Cologne circles – “Swimming Pool” by the band BläckFööss. These songs and stories that develop while splashing around in the outdoor pool are part of the German summer feeling and the nostalgic memories that bring generations together.
It remains to be seen what will happen next in Landsweiler's speeches. Finding a balance between innovation and tradition is the big challenge. It remains to be seen whether the citizens' voice will be heard and whether residents and the community will come to a common solution that does justice to the region's swimming culture.
