Gas explosion in Differten: seriously injured man flown to hospital
A serious gas explosion left one person injured in a single-family home in the Differten district of Wadgass on Wednesday morning. The incident occurred on Altforweiler Straße and caused great destruction. A relative of the resident who was not present sustained serious injuries and was flown to a special clinic for burn injuries in the Christoph 16 rescue helicopter. Fortunately, the man was able to save himself from the burning building, reports n-tv.de.
The alarm was received by the fire department and police at 9:40 a.m., whereupon emergency services from several firefighting districts were quickly on site. The explosion caused a blast wave that destroyed parts of the front door and an upstairs window. The distribution of debris in the area, including parts of the interior furnishings lying on the street, was extremely dramatic blaulichtreport-saarland.de reported.
Emergency forces in constant use
Police cordoned off a large area while specialists from the local energy supplier were called in to cut off the gas supply. Initial investigations into the cause of the explosion indicate that a technical defect in a gas pipe was responsible. According to the spokesman for the state police department, there is no evidence of foul play or intentional manipulation. Additional neighbors did not need to be evacuated because there were no other people in the building at the time.
The criminal police are currently investigating the exact causes of the explosion accident. An expert should clarify how the gas pipe broke. Unfortunately, the amount of damage caused is still unclear, but the damage to the building and infrastructure is likely to be significant, as reported by n-tv.de emerges. The affected house is still accessible, but not habitable.
In total, several dozen firefighters, police and rescue services were required to secure the building, extinguish smaller subsequent fires and carry out measurements for possible gas residues. The incident shocked the community in Differten and brought the dangers of dealing with gas pipes back into focus.
